There is a lot of foot-dragging by museums with regards to repatriating artifacts. I'm glad the Beltrami County HS chose to do so, even going to court to receive permission to bypass a restriction placed on the collection by a will.

By asking whether Yale’s Peabody Museum has Native Hawaiian remains, Prof Hiʻilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart was able to catalyze return, & work with other Native Hawaiians at Yale to learn & perform protocols for working with the dead. Yale & other Connecticut institutions still have many Indigenous remains for which repatriation hasn’t begun. #Indigenous #NAGPRA

In 1990, Congress passed a law recognizing the unequal treatment of Native American remains and set up a process for tribes to request their return from museums and other institutions that had them. The law, known as the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act or NAGPRA, sought to address this human rights issue by giving Indigenous peoples a way to reclaim their dead.

The proposed regulations would, "clarify and improve upon the systematic process for disposition and repatriation" and, "provide a step-by-step roadmap for museums and Federal agencies to comply with requirements within specific timelines." In addition, the changes will, "emphasize consultation in every step and defer to the customs[...and] traditional knowledge of lineal descendants, Indian Tribes, and Native Hawaiian[s]. "

It is currently open to public comment, and regulators will be listening! If you support the proposal, make your voice heard! We can drown out opposition with enough comments showing support.

I'm currently ear deep in two term papers, one on the SCOTUS #ICWA case, and one on #NAGPRA. Sorry if I'm scarce for the next 2-3 weeks, I'm using social media and podcasts for research too and that's a bit more time consuming than just reading articles.

Totally worth it though.
