On to the #science part of the #OceanIceKO programme - some results from #SoChicEU + #NERC #Defiant project on #Antarvtic #SeaIce from Kaitlyn Naughten - really cool stuff on sea ice thickness from #ESA up and coming but also, as with many #EarthSystem processes, well known problems with models are helped with new physics + higher resolution...

As a way of extending an #introduction to the #science I have most fun doing, I'll do a few tweets on different areas of our #research.

Next up: #glaciers are very cold, poor in nutrients, and found in high altitudes/latitudes, but they host abundant & diverse #microbiomes in summer: lots of daylight & liquid water helps.

But we don't know enough about glacier life in the #Arctic winter. Soon we'll be heading back to the glaciers to explore how their #microbes survive the #polarnight #NERC

Ausbruch des Hunga #Tonga erreichte gewaltige Höhen

Wie das britische National Centre for Earth Observation (#NERC) meldet, erreichte die Aschewolken während des Ausbruchs sogar die #Stratopause unserer #Atmosphäre in mehr als 50 km Höhe.
Der so genannte Schirm der ausgestoßenen #Asche breitete sich demnach überwiegend in 35 km aus, doch im zentralen Bereich jagte die Wucht des Ausbruchs das Material bis in 55 km Höhe.
