Okay, an #English toot today because it's #NGD. I just got this lovely G&L Legacy Special #guitar. It's USA made, and I got to hand it to you USAians, you sometimes make really good guitars! I'm looking forward to getting to know this one. Hey handsome!
(Take a look at that pickguard, though. It's leather. I don't know which animal it came from. I'm going to remove it anyway, because it smells of old cigarettes. Other than that, this is a great guitar!)
#NGD!
Okay, NGD today! This is quite a rare bird, a Richmond Dorchester with Lace Alumitone pickups and of course a Bigsby vibrato (no, it's not "tremolo"). First impression is very good, and I haven't even plugged it in yet. Canadian goodness awaits.
(English below) I dag er det #NGD, eller for uinnvigde: ny #gitar-dag. Eg bytte bort ein raud Squier strat mot denne lekre saken. Hei Delecaster! DiMarzio-mikkar, god hals og elektronikk. Fireposisjons brytar. Eg trur eg likar han godt!
Today is NGD (for the uninitiated: new #guitar day). I swapped a red Squier pro tone strat for this handsome thing. Hello Partsotele! DiMarzio pickups (yes, the Richie Kotzen combo), good electronics & neck, 4-way switch. I think I like it.
#NGD! Ein PRS SE standard 24. Kjøpt brukt og pussa og stelt litt. Fyrsteinntrykket er at dette er veldig mykje gitar for nokså lite pengar. Spesielt halsen er framifrå. Velkomen!
#ngd, sort of. The other night I watchlisted a 19-fret tenor banjo on ebay. The seller gave me a pretty good (relative to their asking price) offer, and I somewhat impulsively came back at them with a bordering-on-insulting counteroffer that I immediately regretted because I HAVE TOO MANY INSTRUMENTS.
But they accepted my offer and the thing shipped quite quickly.
Unfortunately whoever packed it did a rubbish job and it arrived with the neck badly split.
I asked for a not-quite-complete refund because I didn't want to deal with shipping it back, and the seller was cool about that, so I'm now the proud owner of a busted frankenbanjo; I got the aftermarket plastic/bakelite resonator off to find the dowel stick creatively married to the pot.
Whoever cobbled it together seems mostly to have known what they were doing, and the tuners and tailpiece alone are probably worth more than I wound up paying after the refund.
The tone ring is a hollow tube with holes drilled into it, not quite a tubaphone but it should add something to the tone.
Somebody put a zero fret on the thing at some point instead of replacing the nut, which was creative. The bridge that had been on it was impossibly low, seems like someone was trying to achieve electric guitar action on the thing, or maybe it had something to do with the zero fret.
Anyway, the neck just needs gluing as far as I can tell; as people on lutherie forums always love to say "It'll be stronger than it was before!" and it's about time I actually replaced a nut... so, it should be a fun thing to tinker with.
#NGD! I bought this new "Kmise" brand tenor guitar from ebay for an absurdly low price.
at 30" long with a 21.25" scale length it's a little closer to an over-sized baritone ukulele, but it is indeed slightly larger than Kmise's bari uke model, and it's got a pin bridge with steel strings vs the usual ukulele nylon.
I'm pretty sure the body is all mahogany laminate.
It's a really well-made little instrument, absurdly well-made for about $70 shipped with a very nice gig bag. I haven't checked with a tuner but the intonation is spot-on and the action is nice and low all the way up the neck.
It sounds like you would expect a small-bodied laminate guitar to sound; not very loud and not a lot of low-end, but that's fine. I'll record something with a good mic once I've gotten to know it a little better.
I tuned it to #plectrumbanjo CGBD and it will be a lot of fun to noodle around with. Since the scale is something like 5" shorter than a typical plectrum, the strings feel very taut; plus they're steel, which my fingers are not used to. I'll have to research lighter strings.
