Recently switched to #Firefox. #NVDA plays way nicer with it than #JAWS does. But #JAWS works better with #Microsoft #Office. Especially in the calendar part of it. Is the calendar on #Thunderbird at all usable? I'd love to have mail and calendar in one application.

@villon Well, I have different profiles for different Apps/windows. But switching off speech with nvda+s always switches off speech system wide. I'd like to silence sppech in some apps for a while sometimes. Without "killing off" #nvda for those Apps completely. for

Serious question: Why is it possible in #nvda to put a specific window into sleep mode. But only possible to switch off speech for the whole system at once?

@fasnix AALso, Narrator ist als Screenreader jetzt auch nicht die Spitze des Möglichen. #nvda gibt da denke ich ein realistischeres Bild, was möglich ist und was nicht. Wobei die grundsätzlichen Unterschiede natürlich unabhängig davon bestehen. Wir bewegen uns mehr oder weniger zeilenweise über den Bildschirm und wir können nicht wirklich eine Maus nutzen. Es gibt bisweilen Workarounds. Aber die sind dann tatsächlich eher anstrengend.

Is there a way to get further down using #nvda? Or is this something that's just not possible for #blind folks? #accessibility #a11y

Is their a setting where I can tell #nvda t keep quiet while I read with a #braille display, without having to mute it completely?

@storm I think there's a #nvda addon that can help with that. But I'm not sure if it's needed.

If you use #nvda and use more than one language (especially while using #tweesecake). @ou might like to try the addon without a proper name :-) "Plugin that detects any language". Per it's help page it doesn't work with all voice engines, but you could give it a try. The vocalizer from tiflotegnia work pretty great with it.

@quetzatl Yo, al principio, tenía #NVDA pero no confiaba mucho en él. Eran las primeras versiones. Pero llegó un momento en el que me puse a usar NVDA… y hasta hoy. Tengo un #JAWS instalado por si fallara un día NVDA o hubiera algo que me resultara más cómodo usar con JAWS. Hasta para los #audiojuegos escritos en #BGT va mejor que JAWS. Y la clave supongo que está en que tiene continuas actualizaciones; está siempre en desarrollo.

**But** I did manage to find the root cause of an accessibility bug raised at work that I felt was worth writing up. Spoiler alert: this wasn't so much a bug as an unexpected behaviour between NVDA and Storybook 🤷‍♂️

Tested it with #NVDA on #Windows11 with all mentioned browsers (except Safari), same outcome.

Automatic language and dialect switching is also activated. Do I need to install more voices?

Or am I completely missing the point here? This is something I want to teach and showcase in a workshop but apparently it's not working for me...

Okay, so I installed a screen reader (#NVDA) on my Win11 desktop this morning, and after struggling to get it working, I accidentally figured it out.
(I then struggled to get it to STOP working, but that's another story!)
Anyhow, in that app, #man is the word but #MAN is spelled out.
The #hashtag symbol comes out as "number", however - didn't figure out how to change that.
