Las Vegas and surrounding areas are under a state of emergency due to Tropical Storm Hilary.

The county made the official proclamation to ensure additional resources will be available if needed, it said in a tweet.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area – just 30 miles E of the city – is closed to all recreational use.

One thing contributing to #Hilary's serious flood risk is a big dip in the jet stream to the west.

That jet stream dip (called a trough) is "kicking" up pockets of moisture within Hilary, helping rainfall to be even more widespread and intense.
