Did you know that #weather hazards are forecast by global #NWP models - but that when it comes to accurately forecasting tropical #cyclone tracks, NWP models cannot accurately predict #storm intensity? Kerry Emanuel explores this topic in more detail in JCRR: https://journalofcrr.com/physically-based-weather-hazard-modelling-accounting-for-climate-change/
In searching for something else, I stumble across @reuterbal 's
epic thread on #Loki
- no not *that* Loki, but an ingenious sounding source translation package for
#Fortran to allow the #ECMWF #IFS model to run on GPU's.
What a cool piece of software...
Worth a deep read for #NWP + #ClimateModel nerds...

This is fascinating - the tide of #MachineLearning models for #WeatherForecasting.
A very exciting field right now!

This is interesting... On the uses and importance of hydrostatic Vs non-hydrostatic models.
Fascinating to see how #NWP resolution has developed...
From 55km in the 1980s(!) to sub kilometre resolution now.. #DAMSdk #DAMSsommerMøde #WeatherForecast

Admirably simple description of #NWP - numerical weather prediction by pioneer Bent Hansen Sass
Interesting new focus from the ECMWF. And some cool #jobOpportunities

Very happy to be welcoming a new colleague @leifdenby back to #Denmark and #Copenhagen and the team at #DMI
Go give him a follow for #Weather #NWP #Climate + interesting #MachineLearning applications...

@malcolmmielle hah yes, be kind is *always* good feedback.
I'm very familiar with Git, we also use it for managing the main branch of the #HARMONIE #NWP + #HCLIM models, more or less along the lines you give, but I was thinking more of the more "quotidian" code, the kind we use for post processing and analysis- that often has much less focus on it and which is often quite individually programmed - kind of thing we work with everyday but which is rarely optimised for efficiency
My day job is to improve weather forecast by using information from models and observations of the #ocean and #seaice to give a better estimate of the current state of the Earth system
This means sitting at a desk coding, but also engaging with people who know a lot more than I do!
I'm currently working hard on the next gen ocean #reanalysis, to feed into #NWP and hopefully #ERA6 soon. My focus is on #seaice #DataAssimilation and coupled #SST #DA
I moonlight as a cake tester 🍰

Hello folks!
I study the lowest part of the #atmosphere using #turbulence modeling tools like large-eddy simulation and #NWP, and I've also messed around with stuff like #bigdata and #machinelearning #ML. These days, I'm at NREL and my research is specifically tied to #windenergy, where I'm working on model validation as part of the Dept of Energy's RAAW field campaign.

I think this is really cool work - including downstream effects of #WindEnergy onto #Weather #NWP models fro #DTU - part of #NCKF
