I'd say that institutionally, many of them did. #CNN, #MSNBC, and #FoxNews are all popular for good reasons. #Disney is one of the most beloved (or hated) entertainment companies for a reason.
But the problem is, as #CaptainAmerica might say, they've been run by people with agendas, and agendas change. Furthermore, these institutions have been passed down to management and employees who are nothing like their predecessors.
I think there are legitimate reasons why, say, the #NYT and #WaPo are popular now, but the reasons why they became popular don't really apply to those institutions as they exist today.
