It's all very well and good to photograph in the city, but it's more difficult to start a conversation there.
After my hike last week, we stayed at a friend's house in Agematsu along the Kisoji. My daughter and I hung around outside the house and struck up a conversation with these two men. Both of them remembered Masaharu Sawada (沢田正春), a photographer from years ago who did a project on the Kisoji long before anyone else.

Old Japanese photography books are probably my favourite of all. So much to learn. These are of photographs taken on the Kiso-ji between 1919-1992.
Two by Sawada Masaharu (沢田正春) and the other by Yoshida Binshou (吉田敏昭). I walked it last year and plan to do it again looking out for some of the same locations in these books.

Walking the Kiso-ji (Kiso Valley section of the Nakasendo) in Nagano/Gifu last year and late 2020 when there was nobody else around.
