“It was after Montenotte that Napoleon first ordered a medal be struck to commemorate his victory, and these too became potent propaganda tools…
The best of the bronze medals were designed by the skilled engraver and former erotic novelist Vivant Denon, who later became director of the Louvre.”

Ship Street Barracks, Dublin. Built in the early 1800s for the engineers of the Board of Ordnance, this gateway was designed by Francis Johnston. The barracks formed part of the larger Dublin Castle garrison, which was enlarged after the uprisings of 1798 & 1803. #militaryhistory #napoleonicwars #Irishhistory

Louis Napoleon, younger brother of Napoléon I, who ruled over the Kingdom of Holland from 1806 to 1810 had important war trophies, including captured flags, transported to Amsterdam from the Dutch Parliament in The Hague in July 1806. The convoy of trophies was headed by this banner: ‘Louis Napoleon, King of Holland, presents to his capital Amsterdam these trophies seized by brave Netherlanders from their enemies’

Made from the bronze of captured French guns and struck in Paris in 1814, this Prussian 1813 campaign medal was issued to Oberjäger Protzen of the Jäger-Bataillon of the 2. Garde-Regiment
These are the earliest awarded campaign medals of the Napoleonic Wars. Many seasoned Prussian veterans wore their 1813/1814 campaign medals in the battles and sieges of 1815 (Waterloo, Ligny etc)
They are well depicted in period art and uniform plates

#Introduction: Hi all, I'm a #historian #histodon working primarily on the #LongEighteenthCentury. My PhD looked at #Irish soldiers in the #BritishArmy during the #NapoleonicWars. My postdoc looked at Irishmen in the #FrenchArmy (the #IrishBrigade or #WildGeese). Since then I've worked on both topics, with articles & chapters on these & others including the Irish Militia & the #1798Rebellion. I also research on topics relating to the #Crusades & #medievalIreland. Looking forward to meeting you!
