If you don't know the story of what the government did to Native children and their families, you're overdue to learn. While you're at it, consider donating to help with the postproduction costs of "Carlisle 200", a short film by Brave Space Media and Native Women Ride. Yesterday was a National Day of Mourning for the U.S. Today is Native American Heritage Day. Ironic that it’s “observed on the same day that U.S. commercialism runs amok.” #NationalDayOfMourning #NativeAmericanHeritageDay

Today is #Thanksgiving and #NationalDayOfMourning in the US. It's a hard day for our indigenous peoples because of what our forefathers did to them. I'm thankful we're able to hear their stories and recognize their contributions. We must never forget the genocide committed against indigenous people.

For those of us in the US, today is both #Thanksgiving and the #NationalDayofMourning. My hope for everyone today is that you can find time to celebrate your family, by which I mean specifically the people who love you as you are, who care about your happiness, and who want you to live your best life. And if you are forced by circumstance to spend today with relatives rather than family, I hope you have had/will have a #Friendsgiving celebration too.

It’s #Thanksgiving as well as the #NationalDayofMourning and a complex day for many. For myself (a #Latina child of #immigrants ) it was observed by my family as a way to assimilate to a new country where they had a bit more freedom and upward mobility than they did in post-revolution #Nicaragua. But I recognize now, as an adult, the many ways in which this day is problematic. I’m trying to raise my son to understand it goes beyond “a turkey dinner.” How are you achieving this w/ the next gen?

I remember going to one of the early #NationalDayOfMourning
's at Plymouth Rock back in the late 70s. It was a soup foggy day with solitary figures wandering about, appearing all around around me like ghosts manifesting from out of the New England sea smoke. The salty air of the Atlantic swirled, cutting through my flimsy tattered leather jacket with icy fingers. It was at the place of the Wampanoag, and I just a visitor.
"Reconsidering the Origins of #Thanksgiving
What are the origins of the Thanksgiving holiday in the US? Some Americans commemorate a harvest feast celebrated in 1621 at #Plymouth between the #Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. Then, there is the 1637 proclamation by #Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop, who claimed an official “a Day of Thanksgiving” to celebrate the colonists who massacred the #Pequots at Mystic, #Connecticut. How are these different narratives alternately celebrated and erased? How was the creation of Thanksgiving as a national holiday a way of solidifying American national identity? This show explores the politics of Thanksgiving with interviews that provide two very different perspectives. Join your host, Dr. J. Kehaulani Kauanui, and guests, Ramona Nosapocket Peters (Mashpee Wampanoag), cultural worker and artist, and Moonanum James (Aquinnah Wampanoag), co-leader of the United American Indians of #NewEngland, who hosts an annual “#NationalDayOfMourning,” on Cole Hill, MA, as an alternative."

Are you, like me, regularly sharing the Native Land map in your events/meetings and inviting people to use it to locate whose land they're on? This seems an especially appropriate week to donate and support the work it represents. Getting in touch to ask how to give, will come back to share what I learn. If you have other hashtags to suggest please let me know--still learning. https://native-land.ca/support/supporters-circle/ #indigenous #NationalDayOfMourning #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #LandBack

@madeline4health Some sites (not social) that I frequent highlight this as Native American Heritage Month but that doesn't address #NationalDayOfMourning; featuring Native American writers on my local library website, for example. In a work meeting someone asked our favorite Thanksgiving food as icebreaker. I said I was identifying local/Indigenous foods to eat on Native American Heritage Day and planning a wild rice dish. I take any chance to push back on centering of the dominant narrative.
