Curbs on the meat trade—from infrastructure requirements to a flood of paperwork—tightened cow-slaughter laws, vigilante attacks and arrests, including under the draconian National Security Act, have hit livelihoods of thousands, including butchers, meat-sellers, workers and traders, the majority Muslim, according to the findings of a six-month study conducted in five cities in UP and Maharashtra, India’s two largest meat-exporting states, during 2021 and 2022. The first of a two-part series based on that study.

The #SupremeCourt has ruled that Manipuri activist #ErendroLeichombam, who was arrested and charged under the #NationalSecurityAct for a Facebook post saying cow urine doesn’t cure COVID-19 and criticising BJP leaders who spread misinformation, must be released immediately.
“He cannot be kept in jail even for a day. We will order his release today,” a bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and M.R. Shah said.
