Cherokees have a rich cultural understanding of a #SolarEclipse. Historically, Cherokees refer to Nvdo tsulisihvsgiyi (The time when the sun/moon get dark). They also know an eclipse as Nvdo walosi ugisgo (Sun/Moon, the frog eats it).
In the 1730s, the Irish trader James Adair referred to Cherokee responses to eclipses in condensing terms, writing that they acted “like lunatics.”
Adair was wrong. Cherokees understood eclipses as part of an interconnected universe. #NativeScience #histodons
