"Children who lived closer to wells in heavily drilled Pennsylvania were more likely to develop a relatively rare form of cancer, and nearby residents of all ages had an increased chance of severe asthma reactions, researchers said in reports released Tuesday evening.

"The taxpayer-funded research by the University of Pittsburgh adds to a body of evidence suggesting links between the and certain health problems. The researchers found what they called significant associations between gas industry activity and two ailments: asthma and a relatively rare type of cancer in children called lymphoma."

"Critics say the decision comes at a high cost to both the climate and human health"

"California regulators voted Thursday to increase the capacity of a Los Angeles storage field, where a 2015 blowout caused the nation’s largest-ever and forced thousands from their homes.

"Locals, environmental advocates, and lawmakers have called for the closure of the facility, which has been approved to increase more than 20% in capacity."

: vows to block “radical climate agenda,” rakes in and industry contributions

By Taylor Giorno and Jimmy Cloutier, May 12, 2023 5:35 pm

"The Environmental Protection Agency unveiled a new proposal Thursday to cut emissions from thousands of power plants burning coal or two of the top sources of electricity across the United States. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), criticizing the 'radical' proposal, issued his own scorched earth ultimatum on Wednesday ahead of the announcement.

"Manchin, chair of the and the top recipient of contributions from the industry during the 2022 election cycle, vowed Wednesday to oppose every one of President Joe Biden’s nominees for the EPA 'until they halt their government overreach.'

"'This Administration is determined to advance its radical climate agenda and has made it clear they are hellbent on doing everything in their power to regulate coal and gas-fueled power plants out of existence, no matter the cost to energy security and reliability,' Manchin wrote in a statement released Wednesday.

"What did not disclose in his statement, however, is that the proposal would jeopardize one facility that’s particularly lucrative for Manchin’s family business, Inc., POLITICO reported. Enersystems delivers waste coal to the Grant Town power plant, which was reportedly already struggling financially, troubles that are expected to deepen with the strict new climate proposal.

"Manchin personally received $537,000 from Enersystems last year, according to POLITICO’s analysis of personal financial disclosures filed with the U.S. Senate, and he has been paid more than $5 million by the company since he was first elected in 2010. His son, Joe Manchin IV, now runs Enersystems. The Senator’s campaign has also benefited from political contributions from Enersystems, OpenSecrets reported last year."

"A fuel pathway currently up for approval in California provides a great example of what’s happening. A run-of-the-mill hydrogen producer that generates hydrogen by reforming fossil natural gas from the gas grid has proposed purchasing environmental attributes from a large dairy farm generating biomethane from dairy manure…all the way in upstate New York. As the thinking goes, because that farm is no longer venting that methane into the atmosphere, and that methane is instead combusted into CO2, that farm should be credited for avoiding the powerful climate-forcing effects of methane. This means that anywhere in the country, if a farm can reduce its methane emissions from dairy manure beyond what is legally required and then pump that natural gas into the gas grid, it can be credited for that methane reduction under the LCFS as part of a 'book-and-claim' approach. This functions similarly to a carbon offset program, but without any requirements for demonstrating additionality. By purchasing the 'attributes' of the methane (i.e., ensuring that nobody else claims it), a hydrogen producer in California can therefore credit their fossil-derived hydrogen with the sizable credits from avoided methane emissions."

The natural gas price in Europe (Amsterdam) reached another psychological milestone. Today since almost 2 years the price is under 40 EUR/MWh. The market closed with 39.325 EUR/MWh.

Consumers can already benefit from that development when establishing new contracts.

The has released their full report of worldwide in 2022. Here are some of the key findings. The full report is available for download (link below).
- Global energy-related CO2 emissions grew by 0.9% or 321 Mt in 2022, reaching a new high of over 36.8 Gt. Following two years of exceptional oscillations in energy use and emissions, caused in part by the Covid-19 pandemic, last year’s growth was much slower than 2021’s rebound of more than 6%. Emissions from energy combustion increased by 423 Mt, while emissions from industrial processes decreased by 102 Mt.

- Increased emissions from coal more than offset reductions from natural gas. Amid a wave of gas-to-coal switching during the global energy crisis, CO2 emissions from coal grew by 1.6% or 243 Mt, far exceeding the last decade’s average growth rate, and reaching a new all-time high of almost 15.5 Gt.

- Emissions from oil grew even more than emissions from coal, rising by 2.5% or 268 Mt to 11.2 Gt. Around half of the increase came from aviation, as air travel continued to rebound from pandemic lows, nearing 80% of 2019 levels. Tempering this increase, electric vehicles continued to gain momentum in 2022, with over 10 million cars sold, exceeding 14% of global car sales.

- In a year marked by energy price shocks, rising inflation, and disruptions to traditional fuel trade flows, global growth in emissions was lower than feared, despite gas-to-coal switching in many countries. Increased deployment of clean energy technologies such as renewables, electric vehicles, and heat pumps helped prevent an additional 550 Mt in CO2 emissions. Industrial production curtailment, particularly in China and Europe, also averted additional emissions.
