Ramming speed!
On the (relatively modern) practice of sticking rams on ships that had no business being there. Great #navalhistory by @DreadShips
A bit of #history from the #americanrevolution. A cannonball (recovered underwater) from the Battle of Valcour (oct 1776), I believe fired from the HSM Inflexible. #NavalHistory

I'm listening to the #LionsLedByDonkeys episode about the Yamato, and one of my favorite stories is how her sister ship, the Musashi, was so goddamn big when it launched it flooded Nagasaki harbor. The entire thing was a hilariously accurate metaphor for what Imperial Japan was prioritizing.

Someone in the comments on this video pointed out that no wonder Rodney gave such a beating to Bismarck because she was on her way for a nice and desperately needed refit over in the United States before she had to turn around.
It has the same energy as Will Smith's character in Independence Day dragging an alien along while yelling "I could've been at a barbecue!"
Because among other things I am a #navalhistory nerd I got to talking about the Taihou, aka the IJN aircraft carrier that blew up thanks to a glancing blow from a torpedo that ruptured its aviation fuel tanks and bad damage control. Hilariously, my phone keeps autocorrecting Taihou to Tahoe, like the Chevy SUV.
Well, let's see, one is an example of an overly aggressive imperlist culture that is way too reliant on foreign oil shooting itself in the foot, and the other is an aircraft carrier.
One of my favorite YouTube videos. And I love how everyone seems to have glommed onto the Kamchatka as our honorary failson of a ship.
Quick thread to answer @Loukas's (excellent) question:
"Were first Royal Navy aircraft carriers were built slower on purpose because they were designed to stay with battleships?"
This is something that does come up a lot in 70s/80s books. But the answer is... no.
This seems to have mostly been a bit of a misunderstanding about how carriers WORK (no really).
Let's look quickly at the reasons why: 🧵 #histodons #histodon #navalHistory /1

But seriously, I don't understand why nobody has already looked at the history of Admiralty Publications, I just thought somebody else would have done it by now #maritimehistory #navalhistory

Would anybody have suggestions for reading up on the formation of the Naval Staff during WW1? or Better, any suggestions for somebody who works on that stuff that I could drop an email to? #navalhistory #RoyalNavy #maritimehistory

Currently I’m in between my BA in #History, and an MA. I’m ready to get started. In the meantime I enjoy being a #husband and #dad, collecting #LEGO and working through an ever-growing #reading list. I’m a proud #Navy #mustang and enjoy talking #navalhistory and current events around the fleet with any and everyone. Although most of my time has been spent in #SuperHornets in Japan, my career is pretty varied. Happy to be here and learn with y’all!

In my introduction I said I was at home on the #sea but have never taken it for granted. From #SAR to #racing, and #coastal walking to learning and #writing about the sea, it will always be part of me.
Over the years I've developed associated interests in #lighthouses #seashanties #maritimehistory #shipbuilding #navalhistory and #shipwrecks

This shell casing was fired during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Our collections manager who pulled it out for me wanted to rotate away from the naked mermaid for the photo I insisted thats why I wanted it.

Is #Museumadon a thing? Can it be?
We recreated the tide charts written on the bridge windows of USS New Jersey, specifically copying one from the ship's trip to Bremerton for her decommissioning in 1969.
