Today in Writing History May 5, 1864: Nellie Bly, American journalist and author, was born on this day. Bly was famous for her record-breaking trip around the world, which she completed in 72 days. This was faster than Phineas Fogg’s trip, in Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days.” However, she also pioneered investigative journalism. In one of her most celebrated pieces, she went undercover to report on abuse and neglect at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island. Her report created a sensation, which led to some reforms.

#OnThisDay, 25 Jan 1890, American journalist Nellie Bly arrives back in New York, becoming the first person to circumnavigate the world in less than 80 days (she took 72). In France she had met Jules Verne, whose fictional story inspired her trip. She was so popular in the US there was a board game of her journey.

Bly had already caused a stir after her undercover reporting from an asylum.

Dieci giorni in manicomio

Io credo che #NellieBly sia stata molto più di una #giornalista. Si fece internare in #manicompio e documentò i soprusi a persone che, nella maggior parte dei casi, non avevano nulla se non del normale stress. È un #libro che consiglio per la sua #importanza. È breve e si legge di un fiato ma è anche una storia delicata, che va presa con una certa gentilezza perchè ciò che si maneggia è la fragilità umana e la sua miseria.

#NellieBly wurde in den letzten Jahren eigentlich immer wieder vorgestellt, auch auf Deutsch und in größeren Medien, zumal um ihren hundertsten Todestag im vergangenen Januar herum. Beim sehr empfehlenswerten #AvivaVerlag liegen zwei Reportagenbände vor.
