Backtrack to August 16, 1995, when Microsoft unveiled Internet Explorer 1, the browser that seemed destined for a permanent bond with #Windows.

In a world where #Netscape and all existed, #Microsoft had a different plan in mind: why offer choices when you can just license a copy of Spyglass Mosaic as pass it as your own and eliminate all competition?

That little blue "E" icon became synonymous with installing other browsers, until it was replaced by #Edge.

I mean #SeaMonkey based off #Netscape still exists but I don't consider it a valid option for most use-cases, unless you'd literally accept #LynxBrowser and #IE6 as well...

@mawr @solarmerps we can already see that, and since #ActivityPub is an #OpenStandard like the entire #web, it shure as hell will sooner or later be obsoleted.

We ain't using #Mosaic or #Netscape today anymore, nor does anyone I know use #Outlook anymore...

Granted, #ActivityPub as a #MultiVendor / #MultiProvider - #Standard will outlive #Mastodon anyway, just as #HTML & #JavaScript outlived #Mosaic & #Netscape.

At most Mastodon will die out like #ActiveX, #InternetExplorer & #Twitter nowadays and #Windows ["Server"] in the future...

I've been using #Netscape followed by #Firefox and #Thunderbird since the 90s, and I've never had trouble installing Thunderbird until this past week. I put it on my Dad's new computer, and the PDF attachments were "damaged" and wouldn't open. The attachments opened fine on other computers.

Der war viel besser als der NCSA Mosaic. 😉

Aber auch 28 Jahre nach der Erfindung des Lesezeichens im Webbrowser klicken Leute immer noch auf einen Link in ihrer E-Mail, um die Website ihrer Bank, ihres Händlers oder ihres Dienstleisters aufzurufen. Dabei ist den Menschen alles an die Hand gegeben, um die Ära des #Phishing zu beenden…
