#Selfhosted applications like #Nextcloud really ought to think up a better way to handle #authentication.

Some sort of human-assisted interactive key exchange, like what #Syncthing and #Bluetooth do, seems better than using Let's Encrypt and a password, which (1) isn't exactly secure and (2) runs on somebody else's computer.

Just had a look at what it would take to install #Nextcloud on a #Debian server, and came away disappointed. From the look of it, making a .deb of Nextcloud is basically impossible.

I rely on Debian packaging to keep my server up-to-date, stable, and secure, so that pretty much puts an end to this whole idea. 😥

Moving 55GB from one #nextcloud to another, from #cloudron to another cloudron stack sharing the same SSHfs storage box, this is so easy it’s a delight 😊

I think a project I want to do when @The_Augusto and I get set up in our new apartment is to set up a home [media] server. PC game streaming, Jellyfin, NextCloud. All virtualized of course and probably on #Debian as the base operating system, ChimeraOS for the game server, then Docker for the other services.

Thoughts?

I've been running nextcloud for..... 10 years now? And owncloud before that.

Some gotchyas, and had a few frustrating updates (last bunch have been painless tho).

Don't pile in too many apps on a pi, it can definitely get bogged down. Avoid photos/video streaming/media via the Web app itself

I run it in docker, but made some mods to the container because it makes a few really stupid design decisions.

(I am a Sysadmin for my job tho)

Nutzt hier wer den Kalender von #Nextcloud via #CalDAV mit mehreren Personen und mehreren Geräten? Seit einiger Zeit werden nicht alle Einträge synchronisiert. Eine Systematik habe ich noch nicht herausgefunden. Ich glaube vor allem zwischen den zwei Personen, die den Kalender nutzen hakt es. Keine Fehlermeldung beim Server.

Spent the better part of yesterday afternoon and this morning trying to move my Nextcloud instance to another server and running it in a Podman container (managed by Quadlet). Super bummed out, but it's not happening. 🙁

The closest I've got was having a running instance, even being able to log in, but ultimately unable to get write permissions on the data dir.

No amount of `:z`, `:Z` or UID/GID mapping would resolve this issue.

@silvermoon82 I started using #Floccus with my #Nextcloud instance a while ago to sync my bookmarks across devices and browser, and I've never looked back since then.

I was actually wondering what took Google so long. Knowing the company, knowing how many folks use their backend to synchronize bookmarks across Chrome and Android instances, and assuming that they know how many of them bookmark torrent and warez sites.

Fuck it - sometimes I really HATE #linux. For every half good tool, you have a proper UI that you can handle stuff with, but if you deal with a Linux system, everything has to be ridiculously complicated, and you need a 3 lines prompt for something you can usually fix with a click on a button - like it's requested from the community since fucking 2013! Yes, #nextcloud - looking at you and the banned IP list -.-

@jby I've just setup must self-hosted #rss reader on #nextcloud. It's a much more enjoyable way to find things to read and watch than relying on algorithms tuned to leech my attention.

I used to use this for journal TOCs, but every effort ended with me abandoning my feed, overflowing with an anxiety-inducing backlog of unread/unprocessed articles. How do you manage?

But then again, I did admin a big #Nextcloud for a client in the past and they occassionally needed to add Terabytes (!!!) of data as they basically did their entire #Workflow in it.

Which is good since they solved the headache of backing up thousands' of peoples' devices and getting stuff to work across OSes, locations and so forth as well as making stealing their devices basically pointless beyond the salvageability of a remote-bricked ThinkPad.

@mart_e NextCloud @nextcloud allow file drop upload links, and then you can also share a read only link to see all uploads and other options are possible too. Very flexible tool.
