“It takes men to govern men, and what governs the greater force will control the lesser. It is not necessary to cut two holes in the gate, the one for the large, the other for the small cat. The small cat can go through the large hole.”

—Edward Drinker Cope, 1889

You can’t make this shit up. At least it explains the origin of the brilliant proverb “ is the curse of the Drinker classes”.

Howdy! By way of introduction…
I’m David, he/him. I’m a designer & a typographer & (accidentally?) a historian. I teach graphic design at VCU in Richmond. UTPress just published a book I wrote & designed about the Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection. I am currently about 1/2 through my work on an MLIS degree from ODU.
I'm liking the vibe here, the nature of the interactions, & the speed of the information.

HBD! to William Leavenworth, born November 10, 1799 in Canaan, NY. In 1834, William Leavenworth and A.R. Gillmore adapted the pantograph to combine with Wells’ lateral router. The router-pantograph allowed for the mass production of wood type.

The only know copy of _Specimens of Leavenworth’s Patent Wood Type, Manufactured by J M Debow, Allentown, NJ_ is held in Special Collections at @nypl@twitter.com
