Just unboxed the #LicheePi4A #RISCV board. Currently installing #NixOS on it. Takes ages, cause there's no binary caches for riscv64-linux and it compiles everything from scratch. Feels a bit like the old Gentoo days 😛

But I can't complain so far. Everything seems to be working, I just have to be patient...

As someone who relates very much to ‘please give me some sparcstations again’ and ‘why didn’t anyone tell me that Perl for HP-UX 11 was downloadable from a server at tudelft.nl hosted less than a few KM away so I actually didn’t have to compile gcc first to get a new Perl version’ I urge you to have a good look at what #NixOS is and what it can bring you. For me it felt like 1998 all over again.

@solene if you want something rock-solid and with a ton of packages, you could always try #NixOS (or another OS that has Nix installed on top!) If you go the first route, you also have the bonus of being able to reproduce the environment in case the machine goes kaput.

I have no complaints about the current interface, but I don’t mind getting something a bit more in line with what is usual in interface design today too. 👍🏻

It's a little sad, the easiest way to print in my install of #nixos right now is to send files to my phone.....

I mean cups is setup and my printer exists and occasionally it actually ends up printing. But it is glacially slow.

Got fed up with OpenSUSE things on the weekend, so I installed #NixOS last night.
✅ Stuff works. Eg: Steam install was trivial.

It makes packaging extremely easy; I'm not a full #NixOS user, but I use #Nixpkgs (and I maintain a '#NixUserRepository' for some niche software in a community I'm part of) along with #HomeManager for automatically installing tools I use on a daily basis and for managing certain aspects of my dotfiles.

NixOS seems like it could be worth it for ensuring all of your system tweaks are carried over when you reinstall. I haven't had the time to set up NixOS yet, but I will soon.™

I have finally joined the ranks of #NixOS users ... my flakes, dotfiles, and home-manager setup are now all in one directory, and cleanly managed. Yay! 🥳

Tested my Ethernet module for the @frameworkcomputer on #NixOS
It works _perfectly_ well! I just had to update my flake input `nixos-hardware`, rebuild, switch, and I got 1Gbit download on the first try 😍
