The #compost pile is not a waste to be managed. You mix carbon, nitrogen, air, and water.
You produce a fertilizer that has a high-carbon value that you will put back into the soil.
You are a carbon farmer on a mission for a #climateaction.
It is very very very valuable to compost.

This is a garden bed prepped with our deep compost mulch.
Everything here is free, organic, homemade, and made with hand tools only.
Earthworms helped make this happen. When we say they do wonders we mean that.

Here it is about to be the time of the year when you start a leaf mold pile.
Worm casting is one of the best activators for those piles and will help the pile break down faster.
The reason why you want leaf mold is that mixed with worm casting it will give you the best homemade potting mix.

Working on the carbon pile before the fall.
All of the leaves, twigs, and wood materials that have not been yet broken down from last year are being harvested and piled up in a separate heap.
Every time I add a layer of greens I can have my brown that are ready.
The fall will do its work and add a new layer in a few weeks.

A few weeks ago, a journalist from the local newspaper interviewed me for about one hour about #NoDig #gardening Their photographer was all over the #garden.
Today the article was published on half a page in all local editions across our state - and I have no subscription nor is it online outside the paywall. âšī¸
So later, I have to get out to get the print edition.
Anyway, thanks to #CharlesDowding and all the other NoDig practitioners who helped me to get where I am with the garden now.

Summer is the time of the year when we have more greens than browns.
To fix this issue you can let your greens dry out on the soil and let them turn into browns.
For example, from grass clippings make a layer the depth of a hand on the ground and let the sun do its work.
You will prepare a garden area and have a continuous flow of browns for your piles.

@stevelord #FoodForests are one type of ecosystem. Not every type of veg wants to be grown in shade of bushes or trees - as not every ecosystem on Earth is a forest.
Not every type of veg can out-compete a tree/bush for water.
It's a case of right plant in the right place. For many #vegetables a forest isn't a happy place.
1 of my 2 veg #gardens is shaded by a mature beech, the other is south-facing. I can directly compare the performance of veg grown in otherwise the same way. #NoDig

Too much #cauliflower from the #garden or #allotment?
On my blog (German), you find a #vegan recipe for a plate with cauliflower in three ways:
- crunchy cauli steaks
- creamy cauli curry sauce
- fragrant cauli rice
Except cauliflower, you just need a capsicum/bell pepper, Thai basil, oil, pepper/salt, curry powder, white balsamic vinegar or lemon juice and a bit of water.

The amazing part of #NoDig is that to maintain a #garden bed all you have to do is to drop some #compost with what your soil needs and it is done.
To achieve this result the depth of compost you put on your soil is important so when you do it the first time make sure to layer minimum the size of a hand.
Yes, it is a lot of compost but if you make it at home then it is really easy.
@richrollgardener We came back from a 2 week holiday yesterday. In that period, we had a storm with gale-force winds here - but the sweetcorn, planted in your system of groups, stood up to the test!
Thanks Richard.
For better support, I thought of the system you use.
(Sweetcorn is towards the back in the middle of the photo.)

Summer is the season when we have more greens than browns for the compost piles.
A green will quickly turn into a brown if you let it try under the sun.
Make beds with the depth of a hand full of green material and let it dry for a few days.
Then layer greens and browns of this organic matter.
It will allow you to make compost even in the summer.

When I tell my wife something about plans in the #garden like, "Let's do this and that and in about just 6 yrs - max 8 - it will look great!", she just nods. I get the ok and - sometimes - 6-8 yrs later the plan works out.
That is definitely the case with rose Perennial blush, which I planted about 7 yrs ago against the wall.
For 2-3 weeks/y it turns into a waterfall of flowers.
Planted into a hole with green waste compost surrounded by sharp sand. Annual top-up of green waste compost.

@EmmaBirkett Moisture retention of #NoDig with compost in general is fairly good. My raspberries have been happy with it for years.
Nevertheless, you will increase moisture retention by dense plantings as evaporation is reduced.
Here (in Northern Germany) steady winds dry out my beds. So dense planting helps.
Australian gardeners put dry mulches as lucerne straw or sugarcane mulch on top of the compost to prevent evaporation.
So it also depends on your environment, what will work best for you.
