Today, six months after launching the #NoTranslationNoJustice campaign, we achieved the first positive judicial reaction. Following our request to improve interpretation services within the courtroom, the Court of Trapani decided to provide, within the next months, the technical equipment which is needed to do so. This is a step forward to ensure the full exercise of the right of defence, thus to safeguard the fairness of the proceedings, not only for us but for many other non-italian speaking defendants in Trapani.

Despite this, there is still a long way to go to ensure adequate interpretation and translation in our trial. To this day, only less than 3% of the case file has been translated in the form of a summary written by police authorities. Moreover, the measures necessary to guarantee the rights of all foreign defendants are still a huge challenge. Starting from the absolute inadequacy of the remuneration for interpreters, the lack of trainings, or the inexistence of an accreditation system to establish the competence.

Although today’s decision is a small step forward, it’s important, as it shows that improvements are possible, and this gives us even more motivation to fight for a fair trial.
We will continue to closely monitor the situation to make sure that this measure is effective.
We will continue to fight for more than just that.

IL VERGOGNOSO CASO DEL PROCESSO ALLA IUVENTA

Dopo anni di indagini lo scorso 21 maggio è iniziato il più grande processo di sempre contro la solidarietà in mare.
Un processo caratterizzato da gravi mancanze tra cui l'assenza di traduttori degli atti essendo molti degli imputati stranieri.
