#OTD in 1914 the Franck-Hertz electron collisions experiment showing internal quantum levels of atoms was first presented - and supported Niels Bohr's theory on the structure of the atom. Photos: James Franck, a vacuum tube used in the experiment, and Gustav Hertz.
"It took many decades to go from the first evidence of that extraordinary property of the quantum world to the first applications. That lesson should be recalled to our governments and their funding agencies."
Worth recalling Alain Aspect’s powerful #NobelPrize speech. #EUfunded

Have you ever had a science experiment gone wrong?
It even happens to Nobel laureates! Read about Reinhard Genzel’s anecdotes from his youth and more.
Our former ERC member won a 2020 #NobelPrize for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy. 🏅
RT @NobelPrize: “One day, I was playing with the spectrometer and boy, did I get the full 15 kilovolts!”
Even 2020 physics laureate Reinhard Genzel had some unsuccessful forays in science…

Niels Bohr’s groundbreaking paper proposing a new atomic model, 'On the constitution of atoms and molecules' is dated 5 April 1913. It was published in July of the same year.
Bohr was awarded the #NobelPrize in Physics in 1922.

Svante Arrhenius publishes “On the Influence of Carbonic Acid in the Air upon the Temperature of the Ground”
The first measurements of the effect of C02 on temperature
On p.275 he tabulates temperature increases (by latitude) if CO2 decreases, or increases by 1.5x
He was the 1st Swede to win the #NobelPrize and later went on to chair the Nobel Committee

How did life begin? One key ingredient is coming into view
A #NobelPrize-winning scientist’s team has taken a big step forward in its quest to reconstruct an early-Earth #RNA capable of building #proteins.
Scientists suggest a couple of speculative functions: perhaps the #peptides sequestered metal ions that would otherwise destroy RNAs. Or, they might have helped to form early biomolecular compartments to concentrate RNA and peptides together. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00574-4
