Sometimes, it pays off to sit down and think a couple of minutes before starting implementation.

I intended to write a webhook using Uptime Kuma to monitor a backup job in my Nomad cluster. Then I realized that instead of that, I could also just check whether there was at least one successful run of the job in the last 24h in the Nomad metrics.

Yay simplification!

PSA: If you're running a Nomad cluster with Consul Connect service mesh, do not update to Consul v1.14. The changes in the gRPC TLS handling break Nomad's Consul integration.

Even though the Consul upgrade guide currently states that only Nomad < 1.4.2 is impacted, 1.4.3 is also broken: https://github.com/hashicorp/nomad/issues/15360

Final testing: Successful. I've now got a Vault/Consul/Nomad HA cluster/ And I can still bootstrap everything from the "nothing is running at all" state. Any one of the cluster controller Pi's cann be restarted without warning, and within a couple of moments, all three clusters have sorted themselves out and are back to normal with the two remaining notes.

And it cost me only about a week's worth of evenings. 🙂

And there it is: Nomad is now also HA with three servers on three Raspberry Pis.

A note: It seems that HA/clustering takes some effort, as the Pi's load not increased to about 6% CPU utilization, where before, with only one server of each Consul and Nomad, it was about 4%.

I know it's #Winter - and we are farther North than usual. But it is apparent now just how much the #LightPollution in #LasVegas messed with me. Success! I've successfully migrated my cluster controller, running HashiCorp's Vault, Nomad and Consul, from a VM to a Raspberry Pi 4 4GB. I chickened out on the Nomad migration and took down all jobs first though.

Perhaps of interest to some of you: My new controller node Pi 4, running the aforementioned three servers, has about 5% CPU utilization.

Discovering life in Australia. This is Sarah returned here after 16 years in the UK & discovering again what it means to be an Australian citizen. It’s also me making my first visit to Melbourne. I notice the beautiful early morning sunlight & the juxtaposition of the urban with nature’s proximity. There’s so much quality of life here than in the UK. Sure Australia has its problems too, but public services are good, the economy is much better, & people are happier. #nomad #photography
