I had a talk with Ripley, the who has been abusing my hanging and inadvertently feeding the .

She explained that if I'd taken the simple precaution of looking up her size on the internet and measuring the perch distance, we wouldn't be having this problem, ya jerk.

These photos demonstrate her situation with the aid of a which is bigger than Ripley, but has the same length legs-to-snout.

I apologize for the poor quality of these photos, but here you can see the hanging upside down from a feeder just to get the last few scraps, and the on the ground reaping the benefits of her messy eating.

She is completely ignoring the other feeder, and also ignoring the ground-level feeder which I put in just for her.

Right now, a (a ground-feeding ) has flown up to one of the hanging, perch-less suet feeders (which cannot eat from), and is pounding on the suet, causing bits of it to fly off in every direction.

A flock of *five* Blue Jays has gathered underneath to eat all the pieces.

She is does this, *despite* the fact that I put a feeder with the same suet just for her. at *ground* level where she is supposed to be.

What dirt do the Blue Jays have on her?

I used to complain about staking out my feeders, but lately Biff (the bully) no longer wastes time harassing the other . He gets his food and runs.

And it's not just because of Ripley (the angry ). Biff is afraid of hawks, as he should be.

I read an article about hawks and . eat eggs, but hawks eat Bluejays, and hawks *don't* eat hummingbirds.

It's a type situation: More hawks, more hummingbirds.

Northern Flicker stopped by our yard in the morning, foraging in the grass.

A compilation of a couple of cool things I've seen from Northern Flickers.

The first is an elaborate dance/conversation where I imagine important matters are being discussed. 😉

Next is a Flicker "falling" off a tree and a slow-motion version of the dive. So cool!

This was a delight to see out in the cold sunshine, sipping from the rivulets of water under the snow's edge.

"Get a room!"

It was very cold overnight, down below minus fourteen C in our neighbourhood. It only rarely gets that cold hereabouts (St. John's, Newfoundland).

First thing this morning, these two were doing a courtship dance outside our kitchen door. I would have thought this was a little early in the year for that sort of thing. But all's timely in love.

They kept it up for ten minutes and then disappeared together. A half hour later the female (on the right) was back, checking out the supply of peanuts by our door.

A northern flicker outside our kitchen window a couple of days ago. It was just after sunrise on a rainy day, so it was darker than usual. And I cannot hold cameras straight (I'm lazy about it) so I turnt the picture a little.
