3D-prints of a rare ankylosaur dinosaur osteoderm generated by Tom Hartman of the University of Nottingham. The original bone was recently discovered in the Oxford Clay and donated to the Nottingham Natural History Museum @GeorgeTheGorilla
I’ll be bringing these prints to #SVPCA2023 to help illustrate a lightning talk about the new fossil.

A Jurassic fossil fern in the Nottingham Natural History Museum collection at Wollaton Hall. This specimen has been picked out to go on display with lots of other dinosaur-age fossils in a new dinosaur gallery in 2024.

Listen to @JonathanEmmett and me talk about our new book The Tyrannosaur's Feathers on the latest episode of the Children's Literature Podcast: https://childrensliteraturepodcast.com/2023/07/31/85-the-tyrannosaurs-feathers
We were interviewed on-location at the Nottingham Natural History Museum, Wollaton Hall, where I was also able to show one of the hosts some of the historical palaeontology books in the museum's library!

Hunter the dinosaur hasn't been seen at Wollaton Hall since 2017, but after hiding away in storage for several years, he made an appearance today!
Our volunteer Martin was giving him a health check.

Today I was restoring a specimen from the Nottingham Natural History Museum's fluid preserved collection. This grass snake was suffering from a severe fungal growth that had formed a plug floating on top of the fluid and smothered the specimen inside. Nasty stuff!
Here are shots showing the same snake and jar before and after I removed the fungus, cleaned the snake and jar, and changed the fluid.
I'm feeling proud of this one.

Palaeontologists Richard Forrest @richardforrest (left) and Jordan Bestwick (right) inspect the fossilised remains of a pliosaur recently excavated from the Oxford Clay by the Peterborough Geological and Palaeontological Group. The disarticulated bones include many beautifully preserved teeth.
Richard, who is the chair of the group, brought it into the #NottNatHist museum for us to look at and help him identify the different bits.

Picking out fossils from the collection for potential future display. Came across this spectacular starfish fossil from the Jurassic of England.
The Nottingham Natural History Museum at Wollaton Hall is a treasure trove of fantastic specimens.

A low angle shot of Wollaton Hall's replica T. rex skeleton, a permanent new feature at the Nottingham Natural History Museum.
Relatedly, my new children's picture book, The Tyrannosaur's Feather's, will be published in two months (and the launch will take place at Wollaton Hall!)
I wrote a little bit about them both on my blog here: https://plesiosauria.com/the-tyrannosaurs-feathers-book-coming-soon/

It's #FossilFriday. @MrIchthyosaurus was in the museum recently to remove fossil bones from our 'Titus' T. rex skeleton, and replace them with 3D-printed replicas. The fossils are being returned to the private owner and, excitingly, the full replica T. rex will remain a permanent and free feature at the Nottingham Natural History Museum at Wollaton Hall.

Curator @AdamStuartSmith is usually behind the camera, but here he is in our newest gallery, "The Taxidermists' Tale". The new displays here explore the materials and process of building taxidermy animals and habitat dioramas.
The gallery is open to the public and, like the rest of the museum, is completely free to enter.

@Vickysaurus I was curious because we have some similar new displays at the Nottingham Natural History Museum, Wollaton Hall. The cast of the Charnia fossil looks identical, with a wedge missing from the corner, so it probably is!

Most mounted dinosaur skeletons don't include the gastralia or 'belly ribs'. This is probably because they don't articulate with the rest of the skeleton, and they are delicate, so it can be tricky to position and mount them.
The cast of Stan at Wollaton Hall (into which the real bones of Titus were fitted) has them.
When present, these belly ribs show just how deep-bodied and rotund many dinosaurs were.
Anyway, today I noticed the gastralia in Stan/Titus are a bit skew-if.
This is what all the hard work was leading up to – today the new gallery at Wollaton Hall was abuzz with visitors. Natural history museums really have the power to pull in crowds.

"Is it Real?"
That's what many visitors ask about me and the other taxidermy animals in the Nottingham Natural History Museum.
Today is the Press Launch for our new 'The Taxidermists' Tale' gallery, which seeks to answer that question.
It will open to the public tomorrow alongside a new temporary gallery of microscopic sculptures by Willard Wigan.
Entry to the museum and both new galleries is free.
