What passes for a breakthrough:

Some of the UK's oldest spent nuclear fuel to be moved from a "'locked vault' with no plan for retrieving its contents or decommissioning the building" into a "newly built facility at the site."

New leak heightens international concerns

August 18, 2023

"The latest reported leak of nuclear-contaminated water from the nuclear power plant has again heightened international concerns over the competence of Tokyo Electric Power Company () and the lack of effective regulation from the Japanese government, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.

"Spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a press briefing when asked to comment on media reports that TEPCO recently confirmed a leak of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant as a result of a crack in the hose used to transport the wastewater.

"The legitimacy and safety of 's ocean discharge plan have long been questioned by the international community, and people in Fukushima have pointed out many times that since the nuclear plant accident, TEPCO's handling of the aftermath has been highly problematic, Wang said.

"People are questioning TEPCO's ability to properly handle the nuclear-contaminated water, Wang added.

"'Can TEPCO handle the wastewater in a safe and responsible way throughout the process? Can it manage the 30-year-long discharge without mistakes and errors? Can it ensure the long-term effectiveness and reliability of the treatment facility? Can it conduct wastewater sampling and monitoring activities in strict compliance with the rules? The international community is very doubtful about that,' Wang said.

"Wang reiterated that the Japanese side should take seriously the legitimate concerns of the international community and the people in Japan, stop pushing through the ocean discharge plan, have full and sincere communication with neighboring countries, dispose of the nuclear-contaminated water in a truly responsible way, and accept rigorous international oversight."

"Our land was first created by Bula, who came from saltwater country to the north. With his two wives, the Ngallenjilenji, he hunted across the land and in doing so transformed the landscape through his actions. In a number of places, Bula left his image as paintings in rock shelters. Bula finally went under the ground at a number of locations north of Katherine in an area known to us as 'Sickness Country'. It is called this because the area is very dangerous, and should not be disturbed for fear that earthquakes and fire will destroy the world
Bolung the Rainbow Serpent inhabits the deep green pools found in the Second Gorge. We do not fish in the pools where Bolung sits. When fishing close to these pools, we can take only a small portion of the fish caught and throw back the rest in order to appease Bolung. Drinking water must not be taken from these deep pools but rather from the shallow associated waters. Pregnant women and new initiates may not swim in the Katherine River for fear of disturbing Bolung, who must not be spoken to and must be left undisturbed.”

"'If the water is truly as safe as they claim, then it should be safe for other daily uses as well,' Kataoka said.

"Kataoka is among multiple groups of people who held a rally in front of the Prime Minister's official residence on Friday, requesting the government to halt unilateral release of nuclear water without the agreement of concerned parties and to explore alternative options."

plant gets $150 million in budget

By Sheri McWhirter, Jul. 03, 2023

"Michigan lawmakers included $150 million toward the effort to restart the Palisades nuclear plant as part of a record $81.7 billion state budget passed last week.

"State officials contributed the millions in taxpayer dollars toward International’s effort to get the nuclear plant upgraded and fired back up to provide 800 megawatts of carbon-free, base load power as the energy sector transitions away from fossil fuels. If it happens, it would be the first nuclear plant nationwide to return to generating power after being decommissioned.

"The plant was closed last year when its fuel ran out and the owner sold the facility to Holtec. The new owner has now twice applied for federal money to help get the plant operational again.

"The Biden administration has a $6 billion fund within the U.S. Department of Energy intended to preserve the U.S. nuclear reactor fleet and energy sector jobs.

"[...] Power generation at nuclear plants does not generate greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change, like burning fossil fuels does. However, some advocates remain concerned about ecological from needed and risk from nuclear plants produce."

considers reopening power station

by Philip Authier, August 10, 2023

QUEBEC – "Hydro-QuĂ©bec is currently studying the possibility of reopening the mothballed Gentilly-2 nuclear plant in to boost ’s available power resources in the face of soaring demand.

"On Thursday, Hydro officials confirmed the news, first reported by the Journal de Montréal .

"'Concerning the Gentilly-2 station, an evaluation on the current state of the station is underway, to evaluate our options and to feed our reflection on Quebec’s future energy offering,' the utility said in a statement to the Montreal Gazette.

"The new CEO of Hydro-Québec, , is already on the record saying he has 'an open mind (on future options) given the context of a strong increase in demand,' the statement added.

"'We are evaluating different possible options to increase the production of clean electricity. It would be irresponsible at this time to exclude certain energy sectors.'

"In 2012, the government endorsed a recommendation from Hydro-Québec to close Gentilly-2, a reactor, mainly owing to the high costs of upgrading the installation. It cost Hydro-Québec $80 million to shut down the plant.

"With a capacity of 675 megawatts, the Gentilly-2 reactor started producing power in 1981."

And anywhere else near the ocean where nuclear fuel is being stored on-site.

Warming could create waste problems in

by Jules Walkup August 7, 2023

"If the nuclear waste site were to flood, the concrete and steel barrels that hold the nuclear waste could corrode and threaten the integrity of the canisters. Sitting water has been shown to corrode the steel in nuclear waste containers. In a lab setting, a groundwater-like solution caused corrosion in the kinds of canisters that contain nuclear waste. That’s among the factors that could become a problem if things don’t go as predicted in 2001.

"The Biden administration is following a consent-based plan to find permanent locations for nuclear waste disposal, looking for communities and companies that would be willing to store the waste. But for now, Maine Yankee has to keep an eye on the 60 concrete barrels of radioactivity as the sea keeps rising."
