Am hitting a bit of a barrier with Nyquist as a tool for composing music.

When I'm trying to string a tune together it is coming up with random errors of missing parameters. I suspect it is a garbage collecting routine kicking in.

What would be useful is to see the output of the macro precompiler as Lisp code. Possible?

Experimenting with the Minimoog synthesizer in Nyquist. Manual is a bit opaque, so it's a question of "twiddling" virtual knobs to see what comes out. 🎶

... and what does come out takes me back to the 1970s. Where is my silver suit: I need to join Blakes 7 !

... and this is how it sounds played via Nyquist's synthesizer.

NB have low volume as sounds like someone losing the plot on the keyboard!

Finally making some progress with my spreadsheet based music composition system. 😀 🎶

Got Beethoven's Ode to Joy transcribed, exporting to a .sal script via a macro, and playing via Nyquist. The screenshot shows the first draft.

Sounds like it is being played with a sledgehammer, so will have to put in some dynamics/velocity handling!

Still, despite the limitations, I'm pleased with progress.

Finally getting my head round the Nyquist timed-seq() command to perform a score with multiple instruments.

Requires some argument mangling, but once that is done it seems to work.

Haven't got a way yet of specifying the loudness (dynamic/velocity) in the spreadsheet score. Or sharps and flats. No problemos. It'll be there soon! 😀

Have come up with cunning plan to store a music score in a (LibreOffice) spreadsheet. A macro creates a .SAL script file which Nyquist plays.

The hardest bit was to get back to writing the macro in BASIC. Good grief: I haven't used that since 2000 in MS Access. Had forgotten what a weird language it is.

The score-in-a-spreadsheet method works. It can also be extended to contain orchestration for several instruments. 🎼 🎶 🎵

Just programmed & played my first tune in Nyquist. The sounds of that old favourite 'Clementine' are now ringing around the room. 🎶

To say to get to this point was a 'learning curve' is like saying climbing the north face of the Matterhorn is 'a nice stroll out' ! Had to learn to read music, and also Nyquist, but worth the effort.

Next step is to play about with the various functions to see how they can modify the tones & play using different instruments

Has anyone out there had any luck at compiling Nyquist IDE from source on Linux?

I've tried and I'm getting file missing problems.

btw. I have got a copy of Nyquist but would like to have the NyquistIDE. I assume that Nyquist was included with the Audacity download??

After exploring Audacity, I've moved on to look at Nyquist - the music language extension. The Nyquist language - which is based on Lisp - is very simple. What makes it tricky, for me at least, is the huge range of mathematical terms that it uses of which I am unfamiliar. One made me laugh though: "Breakpoint munging" !

@AdrianBowyer only works if you have high speed video. You wouldn't get much audio with a 100hz frame rate.

TIL that CD audio is at 44.1 kHz because humans can only hear up to 22.05 kHz and by the sampling theorem, if we sample at twice the frequency we get a perfect recreation.
