Carl is talking about "The Heroics of Gary McGath! and how OPF took on JHOVE when Gary couldn't maintain it anymore. I think the history of JHOVE is such a nice use case for open software previously maintained by one person while having a large user base, which was then picked up by a non-profit organization where it now has many contributors and an even larger user base
JHOVE is available in four forms:
- cli: used by researched & practitioners, soon with Docker image
- GUI: general users wanting to try JHOVE
- API: used by devs embedding JHOVE into their own projects
- REST: application with accompanying docker image
"Levels of conformance
Format validation conformance is determined at 3 levels: well-formedness, validity and consistency:
- A digital object is well-formed if it meets the purely syntactic requirements for its format
- an object is valid if it is well-formed & meets higher-level semantic requirements for format validity
- an object is consistent if it's valid & its internally exttracted representation information is consistent with externally supplied representation information"
