This legislation will likely bring about lawsuits that could find their way to an incredibly hostile #SupremeCourt who seems all too willing to overturn #Obergefell We could be witnessing the fall of #GayMarriage in the United States. If you identify as #LGBT and have the means to leave, I am begging you to get out of Tennessee.

If #Obergefell is overturned SS #marriage will become illegal in #Tennessee & some other states. People will be foreced to travel theough multiple states to marry. Existing marriages that took place in places like #Nashville (read my marriage) will be challenged in court by the petty state #GOP. The standard for recognizing the legality of a marriage is if it was legal in the jurisdiction at the time & TN will argue it isn't. #RespectForMarriageAct falls so shockingly short. Not celebrating yet.

The only state that recognizes equal marriage in its constitution is Nevada. That’s an embarrassment 7 years after #Obergefell, but it isn’t surprising. States have a long history of not cleaning up their laws removing dead letter, and it’s already hurting us after #Dobbs.

The #RespectForMarriageAct repeals the 1996 #DefenseOfMarriageAct and codifies federal recognition of states’ same-sex marriages if #Obergefell is overturned. But states could still refuse to allow any new same-sex marriages and former bans could apply.

@dirtypeanut a good step in the right direction but it still forces people like me to pick and choose which state can be lived in and which can't based on the state government (if #Obergefell gets overturned)

Also, does the bill include language that allows private businesses to discriminate against #LGBT people in the name of religious liberty?

The same problems accruing to the overturning of #Roe will accrue if the Trump SCOTUS overturns #Obergefell: States will revert to their original laws on same-sex marriage. Thus while the #RespectForMarriageAct protects existing marriages, it won't allow for new ones.

What #Episcopalians need to understand is that the #Episcopal Church made #MarriageEquality dependant on the legality in the local jurisdiction. For now, that means #LGBTQ parishioners can't get married in their churches in countries without marriage equality. What it will mean if #Obergefell is overturned is that Episcopalians in the #Nashville area will lose access to both marriage & blessings because the Diocese of [Middle] #Tennessee is run by an anti-gay bishop and is in an anti-gay state.

It looks like the Respect for Marriage Act falls short of the #Obergefell codification we were hoping for. It does seem to codify the #Windsor ruling. If Obergefell is struck down by the Supreme Court, the federal government would still have to recognize same sex marriages in states where it is legal, as would those states where it not legal as long as the marriage occurred in a jurisdiction where it was.
