#art/#history: i've metal to thank for introducing me to an extraordinary person. in this case, it's seattle edu-core band, bloodhag, whom i profusely credit. octavia butler - born #otd in 1947 - broke all the rules. against incredible odds, she was the first black science fiction writer.
her widowed mum encouraged octavia - an undiagnosed dyslexic - to read...& she did. voraciously. hours of solace were found at her local library. the books she devoured inspired her to try her hand at storytelling & a propitious writers' course introduced her to the genre that unleashed her creativity: sci-fi.
by the latter part of the 1970s, octavia'd sold so many stories that she could support herself as a full-time author. 'kindred' & her parable series are proving goosebump-inducingly prescient these days.
