I think this is a female of Crocothemis erythraea ("Feuerlibelle"), but could also be Orthetrum ("Blaupfeil")?

Hardly ever see the glorious #Calopteryx #virgo around here so I was very excited to meet this splendid fellow yesterday. Light was horrible and it was windy but this photo is just about acceptable. got major sunburn sat by the pond watching the bugs but it was worth it (don't be like me and always wear suncream folks)

6/11/2023 at Brazos Bend State Park. I was starting to lead a hike around Creekfield when I saw this perched on the wall near the breezway door at the Nature Center from 20 yards away. We all went over for a closer look. After the hike it was still there & it let me scale it. I think it's a *big* Swamp Darner (Epiaeschna heros). #dragonfly #insects #Odonata

I'm really pleased how this turned out. Taken live, in the field, on the banks of the Hudson River in the Adirondacks.
This is a teneral adult dragonhunter, meaning it was emerging from its last molt and could not fly yet, which is why it was such a cooperative subject.
