#Celtic #FolkloreThursday: #Amorgen ("The birth of song/lament") was the first Milesian to disembark on landing in #Ireland, putting his right foot first on Irish soil. The hero`s epithet Glúngel means „with the white-knee(s) or also `with the shining kin`. The #druid teaches #CuChulainn the #Ogham Script and makes the first three judgments in Míle's conquest period.

Hidden amidst the tall bluebells and sheltered between an old juniper and an enthusiastic grape-holly I have a slender native rowan-mountain ash, Sorbus scopulina. It has loved our unusual rains this year and grew taller and thicker than any year prior. In the ogham the rowan is luis or flame. In modern Irish flame is lasair and rowan is caorthann.

My secret treasure is a hazel shrub, transplanted in the shade between houses at the end of a hedge. Beaked hazel is native here but has retreated to isolated populations in remote spaces. In the ogham as in modern Irish it is coll, friend of cracking. #Druidry #July #Gardening #ogham #Gaeilge #hazel ALT: an overhead shot of a hazel shrub with small, medium, and large leaves.

#Ogma mac Elathan, son of Delbaeth, is according to #Irish tradition the inventor of the #Ogham script. In fact, #Ogham wasn't developed until the early Middle Ages.

My scrub oak has been very happy this year. Oak is strongly associated to Druidry. It is the tree associated to the ogham Duir, the second fid of the second aicme. The native oak with an outsized impact on the Rocky Mountain landscape is the scrub oak, generously feeding and sheltering multitudes, but not generally used for its wood. #NativePlants #Colorado #Druidry #Oak #Ogham

My Rowan mountain ash is thriving this year! The second ogham/fid of the first aicme, luis, is connected to the rowan tree. This is the native Colorado variant. #Druidry #NativePlants #Gardening #Ogham #June

Tinne - Holly
Another spear-wood, like Nuin yesterday, but Tinne's divinatory meanings stem more directly from its martial use. It portends strength, power, and tenacity, but also the challenges that strengthen these and make them necessary.
Thinking of Tinne as an indicator of struggle brings to mind the old tales of the Oak and Holly Kings, and their battles as set to the festivals of the year's wheel. Today is 1 March, and with Spring just around the corner, the Holly King's power is on the wane.

Nuin - Ash
This few has been a tough nut to crack-- but then, today doesn't have some big obvious thing on the to-do list like the previous two.
Ash is a lovely hardwood, with a wide variety of uses, but it is especially well-liked as a handle for tools. It was fun for me to learn that it was among the preferred woods for hockey sticks, back when wooden sticks were still in use. When the spear was a commonly used hunting implement and weapon, ash was generally preferred for the shafts.
In Norse cosmology, Yggdrasil, the World Tree, is an ash. It contains all the Nine Realms within its boughs. It fits in with this that the few indicates knowledge of the links between the inner and outer worlds, between the microcosm and the macrocosm, between what we do today and what we will face tomorrow. Returning to the spear, Nuin asks us to consider the throw before making it: is the spear straight enough? Is our arm strong enough? Is the target close enough?

Ailim - Silver Fir
It's funny to me that after starting with the few of endings and beginnings, today's #ogham draw is the one I used to name myself after. The Ovate Book of Ogam gives three trees for Ailim (the other two being Scots Pine and Wych Elm), but it's the Silver Fir and its associations with learning from past mistakes to make better future choices that feels the most relevant today. I have an interview today with a different arm of a company I used to work for, and it looks like I'll have to suss out whether or not this will actually amount to anything.
All three trees associated with Ailim are tall and generally straight-growing; as a result, all three confer on this few the idea of high, clear sight-- whether that's of time, space, or ambition is largely dependent on context.

Idho - Yew
I've been meaning to get serious about a study of #ogham for some time now, and with my enrollment docs for the final grade of #OBOD on the way, today seems as good a time as any. How interesting that Idho would be the pull, then!
The yew is an evergreen and highly cold-resistant. It is often found growing in graveyards. Nothing else will grow in its shade, and this is probably due to the fact that most of its parts (bark and seeds most especially) are poisonous. These qualities probably helped to cement its place in the Ogham as the few of transformation, of endings and beginnings, of death and rebirth. It can be interpreted similarly to XIII in the Tarot.
I'll be meeting up with some friends of mine later today to talk over our plan for going into business together. I still love the idea we had for opening a new shop where we live-- we haven't had a standalone brick-and-mortar spiritual supply shop in years here-- but I've been contemplating a step back from that while I focus on my family and my Druidic studies. Perhaps today is the day to start having that conversation with them.

A cluster of marks
Etched deep into wood
Echoes of an ancient script
A melody of old
The song of trees.
What can you teach us
Majestic Ogham
Of life and love and sorrow?
Wisdom is made up of
Adversity, the blind search
The reed of action
And last, clear foresight
So says the soul of trees
Song of the Ogham
Can you teach me wisdom?
If I carry these lines
Etched on my brow
On the palm of my hand
Will the Ogham sing to me?
