My post on 'Experimenting with Copyright Licences' is now up on the website of the COPIM (Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs) project.

copim.pubpub.org/pub/combinato

It's part of the documentation for Ecological Rewriting, which is the first book coming out of the Combinatorial Books: Gathering Flowers/Open Humanities Press pilot.

openhumanitiespress.org/books/

It discusses both Creative Commons licenses and Collective Conditions for Re-Use (CC4r) by way of Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri's 2017 book Assembly.

By the way, don't forget to register for the COPIM end-of project virtual conference, “Scaling Small: Community Owned Futures for Open Access Books”, taking place today and tomorrow!

📅 Thurs 20 April at 3.30pm-8.15pm (BST) - Fri 21 April 3pm-7pm (BST)

There have been a number of posts relating to @copim recently.

What’s so great about COPIM (copim.pubpub.org/) and some of the projects coming out of it such as the Open Book Collective (openbookcollective.org/) is their emphasis on working collectively to support others.

In particular, it means they’re able to avoid the kind of scenario whereby open access journals and presses are forced to enter into competition with one another for the funding that is available from the likes of the Mellon Foundation, Research England, NIH, ERC, Jisc … Sure, one project may be successful in being awarded a large sum to secure its continuing operation for the coming years. But that means a whole host of others loose out.

I wrote a piece for OASPA on
@copim & its work building non-profit, community-led infrastructure for , how publishers can use what we've built, & the £5.8 million Open Book Futures project that will continue developing it.

"Since November 2019, the COPIM project has been building community-led systems and infrastructures to support and develop OA book publishing. What has been built, how can publishers use it & what comes next?"

So proud of what we have achieved with @copim and really ecstatic that Arcadia & Research England Development Fund will support Open Book Futures (OBF), a new three-year initiative to significantly expand the infrastructures built as part of COPIM! Handing over to the amazing Joe Deville and Lancaster University as leads, who have worked to no end to make OBF happen and to ensure stronger futures for books.

£5.8 million funding to significantly expand and accelerate COPIM open access infrastructures: postdigitalcultures.org/open-b

At the Centre for Postdigital Cultures we will work on expanding and and maintaining COPIM’s soon the be launched Experimental Publishing Compendium, a community-maintained resource to promote experimental book publishing. We will also conduct 3 further experimental book pilots in collaboration with publishers, authors, technology and platform providers, and designers to accommodate more diverse and complex book forms.

@copim Phew, what a ride!

It has been a such a wonderful experience working with the amazingly-talented COPIM team across all Work Packages to develop proofs-of-concept for not-for-profit, community-owned open access book publishing infrastructures over these past 3.5 years - from aspects of Experimental Publishing to working with presses using the Opening the Future revenue model, from conceiving the Open Book Collective as an alternative to BPC-based book publishing, and Thoth, our newly-designed and truly open metadata and dissemination system, to questions of Archiving and Preservation of OA books, and the ongoing work to define and establish community-led governance structures ...

And even more excited, and immensely grateful to our funders Arcadia and Research England Development (RED) fund, who decided to support us for another three years as part of the Open Book Futures project. 📚

Really excited to be working on this £5.8 million infrastructure project -- which will enable a major expansion of the @copim infrastructures and provide a huge boost to community-owned and led publishing:

Thrilled to announce today's launch of the Open Book Collective!

Visit our site to see our members such as Open Book Publishers, the Directory of Open Acccess Books (DOAB), OAPEN, punctum books, mediastudies.press, meson press, Mattering Press, African Minds, and Thoth.

Librarians can see Open Access initiatives, presses & open infrastructure projects, that can be supported via annual memberships that will help these groups to thrive & also contribute to a fund to assist these groups in further developing & bettering their operations.

Supporting members of the OBC contribute to a more durable ecosystem for the long-term sustainability of OA publishers & open infrastructure developers so critical to .

Open Book Collective has been developed by the COPIM project and ScholarLed, generously funded by the Research England Development Fund and Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin.

So @hello and all of my instance-mates, which resource(s) would you share with students about why someone at non-specialist MA level should care about open infrastructure, use open blogging platforms and be interested in infrastructure?

There are so many options, so I'm more looking for the best fit for tone and introductory simplicity. @kfitz I know you've written about this a lot, so I'd be interested from an HC perspective about which piece you would recommend.

@dh people, feel free to chip in!

Our leap into Mastodon has been a little stressful and a lot educational. It provides a much-needed alternative to *that thing over there* & we're learning from it to inform our own future development. If you're into the whole thing, consider supporting us this tinyurl.com/yc28usz4

Having moved over to yesterday, I believe it's time for a proper 👋🏽

Hi, I'm Toby, and am currently working as project manager on the Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs (COPIM) project. With a background in Cultural and Media Studies (MA in Television Studies), I am interested in exploring practices in their many facets - currently with a focus on scholar-and community-led for the Humanities and Social Sciences 📚

For the last thirteen years, I've worked in projects that sought to foster uptake of and practices, tools for teaching and learning, and in more general terms and in a variety of configurations.

From 2012-2018/9, I did a part-time PhD thesis project on Television and Cultural Memory, but eventually decided to step away because things got too complicated ...
