For those who don't like watching videos and rather read, here are some thoughts about mass path mapping: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/b-unicycling/diary/402161#OpenStreetMap #oralhistory

Anyone headed to the Oral History Network of Ireland's 2023 conference in Waterford? I'll be presenting two papers
Care in Crisis: the British Red Cross in Northern Ireland
Stories on the Estate: An Oral History of a Belfast Estate (Twinbrook)

#DesignHistory #OralHistory journal article alert! I'm delighted to see my article published as part of the special electricity issue of the Journal of Electricity History, edited by Animesh Chatterjee and Daniel Perez Zapico, with thanks to the ESB Archives and the National Museum of Ireland: https://energyhistory.eu/en/special-issue/electricity-modernity-and-tradition-during-irish-rural-electrification-1940-1970 #IrishHistory #IrishDesign #MaterialCulture

Coming up on the anniversary of one of the fascinating #Twinbrook stories. Brookville United, a successful local #football team were attacked in a sectarian riot and bundled out of the Lisburn League. Appears to have been tied up in tensions around the Anglo-Irish agreement.
Stories will feature in the Stories on the Estate project. #IrishHistory #OralHistory #soccer #Ireland #NorthernIreland

Maybe I'll regret saying this but while burdensome transcription is a deeply fascinating process. I like rehearing #OralHistory conversations I've had and find the way that groups of people work together fascinating. I've even noticed an incident of communal misremembering today related to #IrishHistory and the #Munich #Olympics. It's about the naming of a specific orangisation involved in #Cycling.

Often I see calls for reviews of works of oral history but I always struggle to find out what works are new or about to be published.
I'm curious, how do others manage that? Is this more because I'm not in an institution and not noticing these things?

Funny how quick things can be lost and forgotten. On the Strand Road in Derry this sliver of old C19th building is, I believe, all that is left of a Red Cross emergency store/depot for those burnt out during the the Bogside. But there's no record of it!
Interviews have turned up 1 or 2 people who think I'm correct but equally can't remember it precisely. This certainly was the McCorkell building, and appears to align with Lady McCorkell's refs in her writings.

Moving story by the Washington Post's
Siobhan O'Grady and Kamila Hrabchuk about the War Childhood Museum, preserving stuffies and other comfort items belonging to Ukrainian kids caught up in the war. It's also (carefully) collecting their stories.

Well, #OralHistory interview fell through at the last minute. Interviewee really needed a long chat and a chance to reschedule. But, plus side, didn't slip and slide at all 👍
Quick #fieldwork #interview ask - recommendations for digital voice recorders? Needs to have built-in encryption, ideally compatible with a foot pedal for note taking/ transcription. Looking at #sts #oralhistory #socialscience #SciComm #journalism folks. Ta!

@Ratman Thanks, ratman! If anyone has a medical emergency that requires a detailed examination of #Irish print #journalism since 1950 through #oralhistory interviews, you know who to ask! #notthatkindofdoctor

1905 days, 257 pages, 30 interviews, one global pandemic, and a partridge in a pear tree. Today I officially submitted the hardbound version of my PhD thesis at Dublin City University, entitled 'The working lives of former journalists and editors: Continuity and change' #OralHistory #journalism #ireland Thanks to everyone who helped along the way #PhDone #notthatkindofdoctor
