Back from the conference! Here's a 15-minute reading of the paper I shared at the 81st meeting of the Western States Folklore Society, on how academic guild history and oral folk tradition offer, and necessitate, different ways of being in time.

As I age I become more accutely aware I need to start recording for my kids. I've started several times but haven't found a system. I learned most of it by the and have tried that with them, but often when they repeat/remind me of something they've altered it just enough to be significantly wrong.

' Native accounts contradicted the timeline centered on the Pueblo Revolt, suggesting some tribes had acquired horses much earlier, but “oral tradition was discounted,” says Comanche historian Jimmy Arterberry, a [study] co-author... “The end result has been to discredit the antiquity of the relationship between Native people and horses,” adds [U of Colorado] archaeologist William Taylor, also a co-author. @grahamefleming Having been schooled to be a folklorist (though that never happened), I appreciate that oral storytelling was very much a real profession, whether to music or not. (Printing and literacy were definitely disruptive technology.) The Illiad and The Odyssey come from this traditions, as do plenty of folktales. Having someone resight The Art of War warms my bones, but I'm guessing that would only happen were he an apprentice in the appropriate profession.

I just submitted an abstract to the annual Western States Folklore Society conference!

Excerpt: Rigor and Remembrance: Two Ways of Being in Time.

"Both oral tradition and guild history deal deeply with the past, yet they deal differently. In this paper, I explore how the perspectives and practices of tradition-bearers and historians create entirely different temporalities."

is my passion, it is my soul! I do my research & I do it well, thoroughly, but I was a storyteller in the for a good 20 years before picking up the ghost walks. These are stories of our ancestors. They deserve some respect. I know folk come to me to be entertained and enchanted, but even telling ghost stories you can pass on real magic. 2/2

Two ways to know the past: guild and . The differences are really interesting.

Historians examine causes of change within a bounded period. Tradition-bearers renew and reinterpret the past in a living, evolving performance practice. Both forms of discourse help people remember what matters, but where history focuses on events in linear time, oral tradition is connected to mnemonic space and springs cyclically from spatial images.

One is argued. The other is lived.
