Life continued to diversify in the Ordovician, and among this diversity were the cephalopods. They produced the largest animals yet to exist, the orthocones, who hung vertically in the water column and decended upon their prey like a claw game.

The pits in the shell margin are most likely caused by the presence of symbionts which benefitted from inhalant currents and caused damage to the host #brachiopod. This is consistent with #parasitism rather than previously know damage linked with failed attacks by durophagous #predators.

#geology i need to find a new blogsite to post up these outcrops. and i need to learn more about how they form.
something to do with #taconic #flysch. that is, sediments settling out deep on the continental slope between the eastern shore of the #ordovician north american continent and the taconic island arc to the east slowly crashing into it.
now i'm confused whether these sediments are coming from the continent or the island arc or both.

What happened to this #shale bed? Notice the flat planes switch orientation 90degrees across the fault. Also maybe some ripple marks to th right.
I will post more in a bit, then there's an (#ordovician?) beach exposed a few yards away, and many other layers of history. Very busy place.

I must go back and investigate further

Recently my Field Studies in #Geology class went to the Hausz Brothers Quarry in #Wisconsin to observe the #Pleistocene Lake Scuppernong sediments and #Ordovician bedrock strata of the #Platteville Formation. We collected #fossils while we were there, and this was my first time! Here are a few of the fossil #invertabrates that I collected from the Ordovician strata. This includes, from left to right, up to down: a #Crinoid, a #Cephalopod #nautiloid, a #Brachiopod and #Bryozoan, and a #Gastropod.

#Ordovician and #Silurian friends in the #NaturkundeMuseumStuttgart . Lovely cephalopods and a very blue #eurypterid reconstruction. The #orthocones should be swimming vertically, but then again there wasn't enough space in the display for that.

An alkaline, nonorogenic granite intruded into #Avalonia in the #Silurian / #Ordovician as it cruised from peri-#Gondwana to #Laurentia, before assembling #Pangea in the #Acadian #Orogeny (#Devonian). It’s coarse, with the #phenocrysts of amphiboles(?) (possibly riebeckite?)…I’m no petrologist. From@the Eaton’s Pond conservation area@at the #Braintree #Quincy border. My photos.

An #Endoceras #orthocone descends upon an unsuspecting #Pseudogygites #trilobite . While they are often reconstructed swimming sideways, recent studies have shown orthocones actually swam upright in the water column, so I drew them more like a claw game, grabbing prey from the sea floor. This specific trilobite species has in fact been found with an orthocone having taken a bite out of it!

M y next watercolour, starring #Ordovician #orthocones, is finished, but I won’t be able to photograph it and show it off until next week’s saturday because I straight up won’t ever be home while the Sun is out until then. Ah, the little joys of working 9 to 5.
There are few #fossils to be found in #Cornwall, but this #Ordovician trilobite found in Veryan near where I live on the #Roseland is one of them. One day I’ll find another…

The #endoskeleton formed by the #aciculae and supported by many muscles is quite unique to polychaete annelids and represents the only example outside the #tetrapods of animals with a trunk appendages rigidified by an endoskeleton. Aciculae evolved in stem errant #annelids in the Early #Ordovician indicating the deep ancestry of these structures, predating tetrapod limbs.

It's appropriate that this #MarineLifeMonday our journey #north reaches the shores of #Hudson'sBay at #Churchill, #Manitoba 🇨🇦. It's here that the largest complete #trilobite #fossil ever found was uncovered from #Ordovician rocks. If you want to see the more than two foot long Isotelus rex in person, head to #Winnipeg's #ManitobaMuseum, where it's displayed in all its splendor.

"A research project undertaken by the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the Institute of Geoscience (IGEO, CSIC-UCM) identified various marine worms from the Palaeozoic era (Ordovician period) 455 million years ago at the Tafilalt Biota site in Morocco. They correspond to the new genus and species Anguiscolex africanus, and the new species Wronascolex superstes".

I can't get enough of ancient 'weird wonders', so I was overjoyed to hear about newfound fossils of a Welsh weirdo that lived ~460 million years ago. @jopabinia explained why this newly described oddball is even weirder than its predecessors (but still SO CUTE, as art by @franzanth clearly shows) https://www.livescience.com/welsh-weird-wonders-ordovician-fossils #science #fossil #wales #ordovician #SciComm
