Life continued to diversify in the Ordovician, and among this diversity were the cephalopods. They produced the largest animals yet to exist, the orthocones, who hung vertically in the water column and decended upon their prey like a claw game.

The pits in the shell margin are most likely caused by the presence of symbionts which benefitted from inhalant currents and caused damage to the host . This is consistent with rather than previously know damage linked with failed attacks by durophagous .

i need to find a new blogsite to post up these outcrops. and i need to learn more about how they form.

something to do with . that is, sediments settling out deep on the continental slope between the eastern shore of the north american continent and the taconic island arc to the east slowly crashing into it.

now i'm confused whether these sediments are coming from the continent or the island arc or both.

some clues here

What happened to this bed? Notice the flat planes switch orientation 90degrees across the fault. Also maybe some ripple marks to th right.

I will post more in a bit, then there's an (?) beach exposed a few yards away, and many other layers of history. Very busy place.

Rt 67 Rensselaer Co. NY state north america

I must go back and investigate further

Recently my Field Studies in class went to the Hausz Brothers Quarry in to observe the Lake Scuppernong sediments and bedrock strata of the Formation. We collected while we were there, and this was my first time! Here are a few of the fossil that I collected from the Ordovician strata. This includes, from left to right, up to down: a , a , a and , and a .

and friends in the . Lovely cephalopods and a very blue reconstruction. The should be swimming vertically, but then again there wasn't enough space in the display for that.

An descends upon an unsuspecting . While they are often reconstructed swimming sideways, recent studies have shown orthocones actually swam upright in the water column, so I drew them more like a claw game, grabbing prey from the sea floor. This specific trilobite species has in fact been found with an orthocone having taken a bite out of it!

The formed by the and supported by many muscles is quite unique to polychaete annelids and represents the only example outside the of animals with a trunk appendages rigidified by an endoskeleton. Aciculae evolved in stem errant in the Early indicating the deep ancestry of these structures, predating tetrapod limbs.

"A research project undertaken by the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the Institute of Geoscience (IGEO, CSIC-UCM) identified various marine worms from the Palaeozoic era (Ordovician period) 455 million years ago at the Tafilalt Biota site in Morocco. They correspond to the new genus and species Anguiscolex africanus, and the new species Wronascolex superstes".
