For , here's a little oribatid I found under the bark of a rotting log in a very wet meadow. Unlike the poppyseed-like galumnoids I've posted before, this one has a clear division between head and abdomen. It would be serendipitous if it were a ptyctimous mite, as a new catalogue of this group was just published: mapress.com/zt/article/view/zo

: a little oribatid from my recent High Park outing. Oribatids are abundant soil-dwelling detritivores and fungivores, sometimes called "beetle mites" because of their hard, shiny shells.

the crushing disappointment when you think you've found a bunch of big juicy mites and it's just some fucking beetles. no offence beetle people.
