I'm a sucker for all things astronomy, pure mechanical thingies and this is just awesome. It's not just an pure mechanical orrery, but also the maker fully documented how he build it - including how to make your own gears.

Now, how to I convince my partner that I really need a CNC-mill... ;-) I so want one of those. The only thing missing is a gear train which models elliptical orbits properly, I've seen it elsewhere, but it drives complexity.

Currently working on a new ring for Danaca Design Gallery's annual Battle of the Rings. This is last year's submission. I got beat out of the battle in the first round, but sold this fun piece on opening day.

I do love an Orrery. Not seen in the picture is the fact that the planets spin around the central sun.

I'd always fancied having an orrery, and five years ago I made one from a kit. This picture from my Flickr albums shows the newly completed model. It only has the Earth and inner planets, and the sun is illuminated from inside. The paper and cardboard kit is made by AstroMedia. I had a bit of fun trying to paint a realistic looking Earth.
