Likewise, the Mediterranean slant-faced grasshopper, Acrida ungarica, has mastered the ability to appear like a dry twig of grass inaturalist.org/observations/1

Camouflage is all about the right place at the right time. The mystery is how does our vision learn to overcome some cues (like color and pattern) to focus on others (like symmetry and silhouette) to overcome the confusion effect and detect the animal.

The red-winged grasshopper, Oedipoda germanica, is really good at camouflage on this landscape of dry lichens on rock inaturalist.org/observations/1

Wow what a scene. Moulting renders insects vulnerable. A while back I witnessed how a hornet Vespula germanica chewed on the soft wings of a moulting Egyptian bird grasshoper, Anacridium aegyptium inaturalist.org/observations/9

I too wonder why insects have such a weak point. Only social insects, who protect each other, are spared. Others have to dig themselves into crevices, like solitary bees, yet are still subject to predation.

And the dryland hills of Los Padres National Forest host of course grasshoppers. Here a specimen of the genus Trimeotropis. So similar in its slender form and camouflage pattern to Mediterranean species I’m familiar with yet subtly different. inaturalist.org/observations/1 Only saw ir because it flew past me, its blueish wings on display, startled by my clumsy walking across the dry brush.
