This new book sounds amazing, especially if like me you know next to nothing about the world.

"The Mongols were not merely invaders, however, and an overemphasis on military history often conceals the rich cultural history of a nomadic society with its own religious traditions and policies of tolerance towards the diverse societies of the medieval ."

"Early developed as a pidgin from both and . Its writing, pioneered mainly by religious teachers of Malay origin, was in the script. Over time, the script was modified in parts to suit the needs of spoken Afrikaans. Arabic was the script of early Afrikaans from the 18th century. The first two written texts in Afrikaans were commentaries on the Qu'ran, their publication funded by the empire."

Why does this matter?

"Research on the written tradition in is relatively recent. Part of the reason lies in the wide acceptance of two assumptions: that Africa is an oral civilization, and that the literature written in Arabic is not part of African civilization."

Comment raconter l’Empire ottoman?

Our dear Mr Paton was quite the mover and shaker, getting to meet with the pasha in and being invited to one of the rare social occasions at Knez Aleksandar's court for the leading people of the realm.

Regular followers might even recognise a name or two from a couple of our previous posts about the Načertanije.

Birth Month Flower: January, Carnations (#6 of a series)
Ketubah(1789) [Source: ROM Collection]

I've learned that this lovely work of art is a Ketubah (Jewish marriage contract) which was given to the bride "for safekeeping and is often hung prominently in the home." It was created in Jerusalem during the Ottoman Period and this is reflected in the style of the border details.

On the topic of macrons (◌̄, ¯, ¯: one of the featured in the major latinization systems for Turkish, hence used e.g. in our github.com/QHOD/ota-keyboard input method), we learn from a nice editorial cartoon that those matter in other languages as well, namely for Māori: thespinoff.co.nz/atea/24-01-20.
