Who knew such a little bird could be such a celebrity? I was walking to the allotment when I saw her on a rock and thought she was a robin, but then she opened her wings to show the russet red beneath and it turns out she's a black redstart, and there are less than 100 breeding pairs in the country. I feel very privileged not only to have spotted her, but also to have got a photo.

On the north coast of Cornwall lies a beach of white boulders at the end of the Cot Valley, near Land's End.
