9/ We even have a supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy! It's name is Sgr A* ("Sagittarius A-star") and it's about 4 million solar masses, which makes it medium-sized in supermassive black hole terms.
The Event Horizon Telescope took a picture of it in radio light last year, and it is such a gorgeous lumpy orange donut 🤩 #OurBlackHole #blackHoles #BlackHoleFriday #astronomy #astrophysics #space

Yesterday, the @ehtelescope@twitter.com revealed the first image of #OurBlackHole at the center of the Milky Way!
SOFIA has studied this region, too! The magnetic fields measured by SOFIA may help prevent matter from slamming into the black hole, explaining why it is relatively quiet.

And here’s a side by side comparison of M87* the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy, versus Sagittarius A* at the center of our galaxy. While they look similar, they couldn’t be more different!
Differences by the numbers:
Mass (in millions of suns): 6,500 vs 4
Radius (in millions of km): 10,500 vs 22
Distance (in light-years): 55 million vs 27,000
If Sagittarius A* were a donut, M87* would be the size of a football field 🤯

For those who have not yet seen the news, here is the latest and greatest image of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
This was the result of a 2-year long international collaboration by the teams at the Event Horizon Telescope and was just released today 🤩
