Very mood-lifting to read a positive acceptance to #NLP and #corpuslinguistics conference #Slovko2023 in October! My sociology #PhD colleague Ondřej Pekáček and I will present our study on migration discourses 2015 and 2022. Title: When is a crisis really a crisis? Using NLP and corpus linguistic methods to reveal differences in migration discourse across Czech media.

I met an amazing scholar yesterday. Professor emerita Gunnel Engwall gave me a scholarship award, and she was one of the absolute pioneers of #corpuslinguistics — around 1970, she took her punched cards, containing information on political language in #French fiction, to the most powerful computer in the country, to get usable data for her #PhD thesis. Imagine the debates she must have gone through to do that …
For some reason, there is no Wikipedia page in English about her (yet).

Volcano, the new piece I created with Comakid with wonderful cello performances by Lily Hope, is being presented as a sound installation for loudspeakers and vibrating floor at the Attenborough arts centre in Leicester today, as part of the Aural Diversity Workshop 5.
