Here at @NorthBayPython we're taking a cautious approach to adapting to our new venue. We've relocated to a venue with far better ventilation than the 1800s Vaudeville theater we used to run out of, but we don't yet have data on ventilation.
So we're requiring masks, and also using CO2 monitors throughout the venue to establish a baseline.
We'll use what we learn to calibrate next year's #HealthAndSafety policy! #PublicHealthPledge #PHPledge #NBPy

We've been a little quiet here, but our work is far from done!
Public Health Pledge author @josh will be presenting about event Health and Safety policies next month in Portland, Oregon.
We're building a community of practice, creating model policies, and notching a few wins.
As the puzzle pieces come together, we can make a renewed push advocating for change -- with the necessary tools ready for people to adopt.

What an honor! I'm thrilled to share that I'm a speaker at the first ever #FOSSY by @conservancy this July in Portland.
I'll be talking about event #HealthAndSafety policies and what the pandemic can teach us about taking our diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to the next level. (Feat. the @phpledge!)
I can't wait to see the full lineup for the conference :ablobcatrave:

@luckytran To prevent this in the future, CDC should join #PHPledge https://publichealthpledge.com/
We congratulate @northbaypython on making #NBPy 2023 the second #PHPledge badged event 👏
The team is doing admirable work to creatively reimagine their event in the pandemic era.

We're delighted to have received two badging applications from events this week! 🥳
The Public Health Pledge event badge helps both participants and organizers:
- participants can quickly parse the Health and Safety policy
- organizers get clear targets to aim for
Event badging is a free service our volunteer team offers. In the process, we review policies and offer suggestions that help organizers do even better within their constraints.

A conference's work on accessibility and inclusion includes the speaker lineup. People need to see themselves represented on stage.
So why are so many thoughtful event organizers launching CFPs without a #HealthAndSafety policy in place?
Why is it OK to launch in a way that's exclusive of disabled and chronically ill people? You wouldn't launch without a Code of Conduct. If I can't tell if your event is going to be safe to attend, there's no way I'm submitting a proposal.

The best time to make #HealthAndSafety policies a standard part of in-person event organizing was years ago.
The second best time to do it is _now_ :ablobcatbongo:
And it's not hard or mysterious, even if you're a small scrappy event!
We, the @phpledge team, are creating resources to help you figure it out and are collaborating with event organizers to help them iron out the finer points. Do reach out!

COVID remains a going concern, with millions of excess deaths globally and millions more having been disabled, including many who are no longer able to work.
Against this backdrop we ask:
Do we take the simple steps to protect each other and our communities, or hitch a ride to wishful thinking?
The 164 (and counting) signatories to #PHPledge all agree:
We can do better than wishful thinking.
Join us, take a stand for safer and more inclusive events: https://publichealthpledge.com
Our team has been a bit preoccupied navigating industry headwinds but the work continues.
We are currently advising several events on #HealthAndSafety policies and will be gearing up for a big push in Q3. We started this initiative knowing it would be a long haul. This is a year of establishing footholds and creating good examples for folks to follow.
Thank you for your solidarity.
Together we will make events safer and more inclusive!

Definitely stealing parts of the @auc COVID safety policy for @northbaypython's policy. Well-defined language, identifying commitments made by the organisers, and requirements and expectations of attendees.

Started work on the #nbpy sponsorship prospectus yesterday.
And because we want our sponsors to share our vision of an inclusive event that respects our attendees, this appears before even a single price is listed:
Hello from the #PHPledge team! It's 2023 week 12, and the work continues apace.
➡️ We are about to reach out to event organizer signatories to invite them to our badging program.
➡️ We have enough feedback on our v2023-01 badge standard to begin work on the next version.
➡️ New signatories continue to stand up in solidarity!
Keep sharing your concerns about #HealthAndSafety with organizers, and point them our way.
Together we'll make events safer and more inclusive 🤝

Was asked to be a panelist on an in-person event, I asked if they have any #PHPledge in place to protect the health & safety of attendees. Got a generic "the ventilation is excellent and we are following official guidelines" reply, which basically means: no masks, we all have to deal with getting COVID 3-4x per year.
Saying no can be hard but #COVID left me unable to think/work for over a month & I think we all deserve more inclusive events.
Seeing photos of masked crowds at FOSS Backstage :meowmeltlove:
Thank you to the organizers of #FOSSBack for setting a great example and making the event safer and more inclusive of immunocompromised people! _This_ is community leadership.
Mask mandates FTW 😷

I hope #EverythingOpen and #SCALE20x both implement a mask mandate next year.
I'd quite like to attend those events, but a mask mandate is the bare minimum of pandemic risk mitigation.
More people should be asking for that. Including people who attended/are attending those events right now.
It's not hard, and I'm here burning my scarce spoons to help organizers figure it out and make events safer and more inclusive *for everyone.*

It's a great day! :party_sparkles:
Today the Public Health and Safety metric in the @chaoss event DEI badging initiative reached release candidate status. We're proud to have reached this milestone alongside Event Location Inclusivity, a timeline consideration.
As an established badging program, this will extend the reach of our work to raise the bar in event organizing 🚀
