For here's the 1940s paddle steamer (the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world) Waverley docked at on the last year. We had been aboard from Portsmouth and this was supposed to be a short stop ahead of a circuit of the island but the engine developed a fault and we ended up with an unexpected longer stop at Yarmouth. It gave us a chance to visit the castle and a pub. And another pub. And another pub.

On this day in history. The paddle steamer Maid of the Loch was launched on Loch Lomond 70 years ago today, on 5 March 1953, and regularly sailed on the loch until 1981. It is hoped to return her to service. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/lom
