The Vatican returned three fragments of the Parthenon temple kept for centuries in what Pope Francis has called a gesture of friendship.
Greece welcomed the return of ancient artifacts from the Acropolis in Athens after the three pieces were taken more than 200 years ago.
It comes as Greece continues its bid to recover remains from the British Museum.

It's one of the oldest symbols of democracy, the 2,500-year-old Parthenon in the Greek capital Athens.
But for more than two centuries, the site has been missing some of its marble sculptures. They were taken by the British ambassador in the 1800s, then sold to the British Museum in London, where they're still on display.
Now pressure is mounting on the museum to return the Greek sculptures.

Thoughtful article on the #ParthenonMarbles asking what “ethical curatorship” might mean in relation to contested heritage.

This is very interesting. Finally we are getting the details of the deal on offer (for the return of the #ParthenonMarbles) by the #BritishMuseum and the deal that the Greek Government would like to have.
There is some overlap - but they're pretty distant from being coterminous. https://twitter.com/alexmarshall81/status/1615295520452362241

The museum edges closer to Parthenon deal with Greece – reports suggest two parties may be nearing agreement after 40-year dispute
The removal of the Parthenon sculptures from Athens was akin to removing the Eiffel Tower from Paris or Stonehenge from Salisbury, Stephen Fry has said, as he called for the return of the classic Greek sculptures to their country of origin.
The actor and writer, who has been advocating for the return of the sculptures held at the British Museum in London, said there was a “win-win” solution.

So the #BritishMuseum is in talks with Greece about the #ParthenonMarbles
We have the technology now to do hi-res 3D scans then print replicas that are visually indistinguishable to the layperson museum visitor so theres absolutely no reason to retain them any longer.
Those 3D scans could even be posted to museum website

Good.
I visited the #Acropolis Museum a few years back, and there's no doubt in my mind the #Parthenonmarbles belong there.

Pope Francis will return three 2,500-year-old sculpted heads from the Parthenon to the Greek Orthodox Church, apparently attempting to avoid a precedent for restituting other Vatican-held treasures looted under colonisation to nation states.
The decision will add further pressure on the British Museum to return its much larger collection of stolen Parthenon marbles.

Most of the 116 artefacts to be returned are made of brass, but others are ivory or wood.
Some artefacts will remain in Cambridge "on extended loan".
In 1897, the British burned Benin City’s palace and exiled the Oba or king. Thousands of brasses and other works were taken.

About time.
Art that has roots should be shown where it was created.
Rich countriesn afford to make copies before returning originals, if they so
And it would not come amiss to help fund museums in the countries of origin. To help show them better, create a new focus of world interest, and to say sorry for the historical plundering.

“Britain could be the protagonists of an ethical empire because this transcends our countries. If the #ParthenonMarbles were reunited here in Athens, within view of the greatest symbol of democracy, it would be a great act for humanity.”
The UK and Greece are in 'advanced stage' of 'secret talks' over a return to Greece of the Parthenon Marbles.
The British Museum and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis have been holding behind-the-scene talks about the reunification of the ancient sculptures, an Athens daily newspaper reports.
The ancient sculptures were taken from the Parthenon temple in Athens in the early 19th century by British diplomat Lord Elgin.

The six objects include two 16th-century bronze plaques stolen in 1897 from the royal palace in Benin City. By agreement 66 more objects will stay on loan at the Horniman Museum for 12 months, pending a second phase of repatriation.
Horniman chief executive Nick Merriman said, "The overwhelming consensus was that the objects had been looted."
This repatriation will increase pressure on the British Museum, which has so far refused to return objects in its collection.
