Evening at #Avignon 🇫🇷 station: an #SNCF class BB66000 diesel is passing alongside a #DB #Autozug car-carrying train which makes a stop here on its way from #Narbonne to #Hamburg🇩🇪. A photo I’ve taken in May 2007. It can’t be repeated easily: DB no longer runs these night-trains (and the French diesel has most likely been scrapped since).

The narrow-gauge #Zentralbahn🇨🇭#Brünig railway at #Interlaken and Lake #Brienz in August 2007. That stretch is mostly flat (according to Swiss standards that is), yet this former #SBB line also includes some rack railway sections further north, towards #Luzern.

A #DB 🇩🇪 car-carrying #AutoZug arrives at #Munich Hauptbahnhof in August 2007. The train had left #Narbonne 🇫🇷 the day before. A class #E10 #Bügelfalte electric worked the consist between the #Stuttgart area and #Munich, from where a class 103 will take the train to #Salzburg 🇦🇹.

An #ÖBB 🇦🇹 class 1180 locomotive is seen here on display in July 2007 at #Lindau 🇩🇪. These locos, built in the 1920s, were based in western #Austria for workings on the #Arlberg line. 1180.09 (the one on the photo) has been preserved.

A #CFL #BB3600 electric: photo taken while on a visit to the #Luxembourg 🇱🇺 railway workshops in the early 2000s. Back then the class was near the end of its career. The pictured loco has not been scrapped though: #3602 was transferred to Bahnpark Augsburg museum.

#Padborg 🇩🇰 yard used to be a place (or still is a place, which I ignore since I haven’t been there for years) where a number of round-nosed #Nohab diesels had been stored. Pictured here, on a photo I’ve taken in July 2006, is former #DSB MX 1030, named “Ellen”. The six-axle class MX locos were built in the early 1960s.

Among #SNCF’s 🇫🇷 traditional long-distance trains the #Béziers to #Paris “Aubrac” certainly stands out: the “Causses” line up to Clermont-Ferrand is full of old railway charm and the scenery is just lovely.

Evening at #Laqueuille 🇫🇷. A station name hard to spell (for the foreigner at least) and a place of old railway charm hard to beat. Back in May 2007, when I took this photo, #SNCF class #X2800 railcars were still a common sight on rural mountain lines across the Massif Central.

#SwissExpress🇨🇭 liveried #SBB Re 4/4 II electric #11108 is seen here at #Zurich main station in April 2006, ready to work an afternoon #EuroCity train bound for #Salzburg 🇦🇹. At Buchs (SG) an ÖBB loco will take over. Because of the layer of “cream” paint this locomotive is nicknamed #Cremeschnitte by railfans.
