The news of Paul's death was a surprise, as celeb deaths are. It felt personal. Celebrity is weird.

A friend, a writer, captured my feelings and a reality about them, perfectly:

"We mourn a little for the loss of something in ourselves, who we were when they came into our lives. And also we realize their humanity, their pain."

2/2 #PaulRubens & Me | That Thanksgiving, I was back in LA, doing the same freelance PR work for "A Chorus Line" @ Columbia.

I'd been to The Improv late one night (drinks) and stopped at the 7-11 in West Hollywood, on the way back to the Rock-n-Roll Hyatt. As I walked to the entrance, Paul walked out. I half-yelled "Peee Weee!" The movie had done well.

"Oh, I remember YOU!" He fake-tripped, made Pee Wee-face and, in a deeeep voice yelled, "I MEANT to do that!" We roared and went our ways.

I'd distribute the EPK by satellite—vs. FedEx—a service I pioneered in Hollywood. And I'd cover part of music-related marketing.

That's what I told told Paul in front on the crudités when he introduced himself and asked what my role was, had I seen the movie, did I like it, and how I thought it would do.

I had, I did, and thought it would do great! I did.
