You can use it with Mastodon accounts (including forks like Glitch), PeerTube accounts, Pixelfed accounts and many other types of Fediverse account.

It's got a really nice array of options if you dig down into the settings menus, it does a lot of things that the official apps don't do. I've tried to summarise the good stuff in the review.

End result: Suddenly the instance decided not to allow embeds on websites. Which was the whole point of using themin the first place.

Asked what was that about (email, here). Nobody replied.

So, we're back to using YouTube. At least it works.

We really need to be using and promoting alternatives to free more people from that hell, which is what you're already doing here on the #fediverse

The fact that services like #YouTube and #Facebook have become so interwoven in basic facets of society is a major problem. They yield tremendous power and control. Using self-hosted, decentralized, federated services like @joinpeertube is the solution that wrests control back away from them.

I've been saying this since Shorts debuted. I'm not the only one. YT is chasing revenue at the expense of their core community. Viewers hate it, creators hate it, and eventually investors will figure it out. The best thing everyone can do it vote with their attention and tell creators you're doing so. Encourage them to push back against #youtube by supporting alternative platforms like #PeerTube

Probably a hot-take, but I don't see a real viable path forward for #PeerTube general instances. It's very hard to scale from any perspective; storage, cost, moderation, etc. I really think the best option for true generalized instances is running your own. That way you don't have to deal with much scale, the costs stay reasonable, and you moderate however you want.

Of course, running an instance has to become MUCH easier before this is a viable option...

As YouTube seems to be going increasingly ad-heavy, have had many requests to do posts about how to get into #PeerTube.

PeerTube is an ad-free video platform on the Fediverse. You can follow and interact with PeerTube accounts from Mastodon etc. When a PeerTube account posts a video, it will appear in your Mastodon timeline just like any post, and you can like, share, reply etc.

I just did a long thread of good PeerTube accounts to follow over on @FediFollows (https://social.growyourown.services/@FediFollows/110917302291902468).

Most people following accounts on the Fediverse's video and audio platform PeerTube are actually on different Fediverse platforms like Mastodon etc. They will see your uploads in their Home timelines on Mastodon etc, in chronological order mixed in with all the non-PeerTube posts.

If you're a publisher on PeerTube, it's probably a good idea to avoid massive batch uploads, so you're not suddenly flooding your followers' timelines with videos/episodes.

I just got done chatting with a creator that I invited to share on #tilvids and while they were interested, they ultimately decided not to because they didn't want to detract from what they were doing on YT. As a creator myself, I completely understand, but this is why it's so important for everyone in the #fediverse community to reach out to creators and encourage them to share on #PeerTube The message coming from their viewers is so much more powerful than some random instance host. 💙

We really need to see more of this! Orgs hosting their own video platforms, using #peertube more like we would see personal websites.

No need to federate with many instances, since it can get messy really quick.

However, this doesn't stop people from following these channels from anywhere on the #fediverse

My #Piped instance is currently down, and so does every other Piped instance I know of: https://github.com/TeamPiped/Piped/issues/2809.

We started getting 403 on `/videoplayback` on the ytproxy starting ~12h ago.

This is most likely #YouTube trying to show that they're serious on cracking down on folks who watch videos without watching ads.

I wish that more content creators were on platforms like #Nebula. I wish there were more of them on #PeerTube too, but I understand the point that many of them make - PeerTube can't be monetized, and not everybody feels like always doing charity.

I'm happy to pay even $10 per month for a platform owned by the content creators themselves (or even a pay-as-you-go model), rather than contributing to Google's spyware and getting interrupted by ads every 10 minutes.

So if this is the nail in the coffin of my experience as a YouTube consumer, let it be it. Cracking whatever new algorithm the folks at Google have decided to implement in order to ensure that only those who are logged in and watch ads can watch videos is fun for a bit, but it becomes boring after a while. At some point I'd just like to move on with my life and watch videos on my tv without having to debug youtube-dl or Piped on a monthly basis.

If any of you know of alternative video platforms like Nebula, with high-quality content and owned by content creators themselves, let me know in the comments. I'm happy to support whoever starts to build a serious alternative to the YouTube cage.
