Walkers are Welcome Town - Todmorden
This is a very varied terrain – small towns and villages nestling in the lower wooded valleys; a middle ‘shelf’ of ancient small farms, and the original hamlets; moorland dotted with reservoirs with splendid views across the Pennine hills. We are a welcoming people with a long history of walking.

Not letting go without a fight!
Spring might be on the horizon, but Winter reminding us it's still in charge in this cold and snowy landscape around Weardale in the North Pennines of North East England.

Abandoned 'Sandyford' stands in almost splendid isolation on the bleak North Pennines.
Originally, it looks to have been two adjoining properties with the head of each household recorded on the 1881 census as being a lead miner.
Can't help wondering about the day to day logistics of living in such isolated places like this, especially in the harsher winter months.

Ten years ago, I did the coast to coast walk, and this photo is of the nine standards as I trekked across a wet moorland towards Keld. I lost the path at one point, so used my compass (remember them) to travel due west across the boggy moor as I knew the road was in that direction.

Afternoon stroll — walking from Watergrove Reservoir to Clough
Wolfcleugh, near Rookhope in Upper Weardale, Co Durham.
Abandoned many years ago in the harsh barren landscape of the North Pennines.
When I come across places like this, I'm just so intrigued about the logistics of daily life.

High Force in Upper Teesdale, Co Durham, where the River Tees dramatically plunges 70 ft (21 m) over the geological feature known as the Whin Sill.

Winter sunlight bringing warm hues to the landscape of Baldersdale, near Barnard Castle, Co Durham. In amongst the trees to the left, Birk Hat Farm, once the home of 'Daughter of the Dales', Hannah Hauxwell. Hannah lived on her own at the house after her parents had died. The farmstead had no electricity or running water.

Abandoned in the 1960's, I always wanted to make a return visit to Riddlehamhope Hall, an abandoned Victorian shooting lodge in a remote spot on the North Pennines. Sadly, I learned that the land owner has had it demolished.
Seemingly, it was once visited by the Duchess of Connaught and Strathearn.
Just imagine the history of this place and those who once lived here!

Walkers are Welcome Town - Alston Moor.
For many walkers the introduction to Alston Moor is the walk up from Dufton on the Pennine Way, over Cross Fell and down in to the picturesque village of Garrigill at the head of the South Tyne valley.
High Pennine hills with large tracts of open moorland interspersed by quiet picturesque valleys providing a wide variety of walking opportunities ranging from a leisurely stroll to an energetic climb.

Winter at New House farmstead, near Langdon Beck in Upper Teesdale.
Perhaps my favourite North Pennine dale, it is often referred to as England's last wilderness.

Crossing the North Pennines on the road between Langdon Beck in Teesdale and St John's Chapel in Weardale. Love the bleakness of the landscape (I believe the marker poles are to assist the drivers of snow ploughs, clearing the route during Winter months).

It seems to be time for an #introduction, so this is my hashtag-laden post.
I'm a #software #developer with (eek!) about 25 years experience, been running my own consultancy for a bit over 10 years. I mainly do #web related stuff (back-end, #APIs, #architecture etc).
I'm particularly interested in #performance and #accessibility. Oh, and I have a degree in #Jazz Studies.
I'm in West #Yorkshire, UK. When I look out the window I see the #Pennines, and that makes me very happy 😃
